{"id":91362,"date":"2018-11-07T19:18:49","date_gmt":"2018-11-07T19:18:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/11\/07\/more-than-meets-the-eye-army-selects-next-gen-camouflage-system\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T09:36:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T09:36:46","slug":"more-than-meets-the-eye-army-selects-next-gen-camouflage-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2018\/11\/07\/more-than-meets-the-eye-army-selects-next-gen-camouflage-system\/","title":{"rendered":"More than meets the eye: Army selects next-gen camouflage system"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has finally selected a company to provide it with the next generation of ultra light-weight, general-purpose camouflage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/06\/13\/this-new-camouflage-netting-could-protect-soldiers-better-than-armor\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ultra-Light Camouflage Netting System<\/a>, or ULCANS, will be an all-weather, state-of-the-art signature concealment system that provides multi-spectral protection for troops and equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program aims to replace the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/04\/11\/army-tanks-in-europe-ditch-the-desert-camo-for-woodland-green\/\" target=_blank>legacy woodland and desert camouflage <\/a>variants developed in the 1990s, and will be developed in light and dark woodland, snow and alpine, desert, and urban variants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army hopes ULCANS will better conceal the signatures of troops and equipment from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/electronic-warfare\/2018\/05\/22\/the-risks-facing-the-pentagons-high-end-electronics-and-radars\/\" target=\"_blank\"> high-end sensor threats <\/a>on the battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contract to produce the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2015\/04\/12\/corps-tests-new-camo-the-enemy-won-t-be-able-to-spot\/\" target=_blank>next-generation camouflage<\/a> was awarded to Fibrotex USA Inc., according to a company statement provided to Army Times. The contract is a 10-year, indefinite delivery and indefinite quantity award, with a total value of $480 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fibrotex is expected to begin full-rate production in early 2019, according to the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1152\" height=\"768\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/A-room-with-a-view.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-92738\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/A-room-with-a-view.jpg.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/A-room-with-a-view.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/A-room-with-a-view.jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/A-room-with-a-view.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1152px) 100vw, 1152px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ULCANS is the result of nearly two years of testing, trials and data collection conducted by the U.S. Army\u2019s Natick Soldier Systems Center in Massachusetts. Natick tested camouflage technologies from major global manufacturers against the Army\u2019s most advanced battlefield surveillance sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of the technologies underpinning ULCANS are based on developments by Fibrotex\u2019s Israel-based parent company over the last two decades, but have been specially modified for the U.S. Department of Defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/05\/02\/the-army-has-more-than-a-million-pieces-of-gear-in-the-old-digital-camo-pattern-they-might-try-dyeing-it\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"253\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635744512282912989-august-6-frontlines-3jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The Army has more than a million pieces of gear in the old, digital camo pattern. They might try dyeing it.<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Army might dye its old camouflage gear to match the colors in its new pattern.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Fibrotex system will provide multi-spectral camouflage, which conceals objects from detection across several portions of the electromagnetic spectrum at the same time. Traditional military camouflage simply hides an object in the visible spectrum, but the multi-spectral design obscures detection in the infrared, thermal and radar spectrum as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday more than ever, military forces and opposition groups are using night vision sensors and thermal devices against our troops, but by using Fibrotex\u2019s camouflage, concealment and deception solutions, we make them undetectable again, allowing them to continue keeping us safe,&#8221; said Eyal Malleron, CEO of Fibrotex USA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Nets4.jpeg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-92739\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Nets4.jpeg.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Nets4.jpeg.jpg?resize=300,225 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Nets4.jpeg.jpg?resize=768,576 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Nets4.jpeg.jpg?resize=1024,768 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Nets4.jpeg.jpg?resize=1536,1152 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fibrotex will also deliver the ULCANS material in reversible designs \u2014 allowing for the first time a different pattern and capability on each \u00ad\u00adside, enabling soldiers, vehicles and systems to disappear into light or dark woodland, snow or alpine and desert or urban environments in any operational theater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have more than 50 years of experience, with thousands of hours in the field and a deep understanding of conventional and asymmetric warfare,&#8221; Malleron said. &#8220;The U.S. Army tested our best camouflage solutions, and the camouflage repeatedly demonstrated the ability to defeat all sensors known to be operating in the battlefield and throughout the electromagnetic spectrum.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ULCANS will also be manufactured stateside, in a new state-of-the-art facility in McCreary County, Kentucky, creating hundreds of new skilled American jobs over the next decade, according to Fibrotex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI firmly believe we have the best workforce in the country, and that their hard work and dedication has earned these new jobs, helping deliver a vital new military contract from McCreary County,&#8221; Rep. Hal Rogers, R-Ky., said in a press statement. &#8220;I take great pride in knowing that our people are crafting these products to keep our warfighters and allies safe, giving them an edge on the battlefield.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new facility is being established next to Outdoor Venture Corporation, which is a strategic partner to Fibrotex USA and already
