{"id":92101,"date":"2021-08-30T18:02:55","date_gmt":"2021-08-30T18:02:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/08\/30\/va-eyes-more-focused-employment-help-with-future-education-benefits-efforts\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T09:31:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T09:31:28","slug":"va-eyes-more-focused-employment-help-with-future-education-benefits-efforts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2021\/08\/30\/va-eyes-more-focused-employment-help-with-future-education-benefits-efforts\/","title":{"rendered":"VA eyes more focused employment help with future education, benefits efforts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent reforms to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/education-transition\/2021\/07\/29\/for-thousands-of-disabled-vets-this-job-training-program-may-be-better-than-the-gi-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\">Post-9\/11 GI Bill<\/a> have been focused largely on broadening eligibility for both what individuals and what types of education opportunities it covers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the head of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/education-transition\/2021\/08\/27\/coronavirus-resurgence-could-cause-major-problems-for-gi-bill-users-next-spring\/\" target=\"_blank\">Veterans Affairs\u2019 Education Service<\/a> service said the future of the benefit may be focused on narrowing down some of those options, based on the success of a few recent department job training programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRight now, it\u2019s just basically a free for all,\u201d said Charmain Bogue, executive director of the agency, during a roundtable with reporters last week. \u201cWe give you all these resources [through the GI Bill] and you have to kind of figure out your own way in terms of what would be a viable career for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt would be nice to be able to say, \u2018These are the top five or top 10 occupations to look at, these are the types of degrees or certificates you need in this type of occupation.\u2019 We are trying to move towards giving better information from that standpoint, so [veterans] can make better informed decisions at the end of the day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2021\/06\/02\/va-wants-more-money-to-expand-popular-tech-training-program-for-job-seeking-vets\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/software-factory.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA wants more money to expand popular tech training program for job-seeking vets<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Officials estimate the VET TEC program will run out of money in July because of its popularity.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fiscal 2020, more than 875,000 individuals used GI Bill benefits for college classes, at a cost of about $11 billion. The program is among the best known benefits for military service and is unlikely to undergo a major overhaul in coming years, given its high usage rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Veterans Affairs officials have seen increasing popularity in recent years with more targeted job training programs, most prominently the Veteran Employment Through Technology Education Courses (VET TEC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That program ran out of its annual allotment of $30 million last week, a month and a half before the end of the fiscal year. Department officials have asked Congress to consider expanding the two-year-old pilot program into a $125 million permanent offering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVeterans are really gravitating towards the program,\u201d Bogue said. \u201cI think the appeal is the fact that it\u2019s short term, and two-year and four-year schools are not for everyone. So people are gravitating towards these short-term certification programs, where they know there\u2019s a demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith just going to a six- or 12-week course, we have a number of students who have actually had six-figure jobs after completing the VET TEC program.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, the new Veteran Rapid Retraining Assistance Program \u2014 established by Congress last year as a way to retrain veterans who lost jobs due to the pandemic \u2014 has seen similar demand since the department began accepting applicants earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2021\/07\/29\/for-thousands-of-disabled-vets-this-job-training-program-may-be-better-than-the-gi-bill\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/185760.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">For thousands of disabled vets, this job training program may be better than the GI Bill<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Veteran Readiness and Employment program served about 123,000 veterans last year but may benefit even more.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bogue said the common thread in the programs is short-term training focused on specific jobs. Both have a list of corporate partners, creating a reliable pipeline for job seekers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat has been a game changer for students,\u201d she said. \u201cWe hear from students a lot that [if they] go school for a short-term certification program, or if they go to a degree-granting program, where\u2019s the employment resources at the end of that journey?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bogue said she\u2019s looking to see how GI Bill offerings could be improved based on lessons learned from those successes, \u201cbasically looking at not only graduation rates but also looking at employment outcome measures\u201d to gauge how well the education funds are serving veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can see in the future where we could sit down and have a conversation about GI Bill and where it\u2019s headed, and how we make a better connection with the employment aspects of the program,\u201d she
