Now, House lawmakers want to know if veterans are facing the same daycare needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Included in the draft Veterans Affairs budget proposal approved by the House Appropriations Committee last week is a requirement for department officials to study the availability of child care services for veterans \u2014 particularly ones currently enrolled in college classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe report should identify barriers that student veterans encounter in accessing child care, the number of veterans who have struggled to find reliable child care, and establish whether lack of child care has impacted veterans\u2019 ability to complete education or training programs,\u201d the bill states.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/06\/24\/military-daycare-spending-would-see-a-big-increase-under-house-proposal\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP19330568346412.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Military daycare spending would see a big increase under House proposal<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">About $213 million would be set aside to develop and build child development centers on military bases.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A recent report from Student Veterans of America noted that more than half of student veterans in America today are parents. \u201cAffordable childcare is critical to ensuring their success in higher education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But data on availability at schools or in nearby communities is elusive. The new report could provide a baseline for future proposals to increase subsidies for student veterans with daycare needs or to launch new services to help those parents find available spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A separate section of the budget bill dealing with Defense Department construction sets aside $213 million for planning and design of child development centers at military bases. If you don\u2019t ask, you don\u2019t get.&quot;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military leaders have said that a lack of child care at military bases creates scheduling and stress issues for troops, which leads to readiness concerns for the entire force. Lawmakers in recent years have worked to increase those options for active-duty personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposed appropriations report, which would be due 120 days after the budget becomes law, would also look at \u201cveterans that use family, friend, or neighbor forms of child care\u201d to evaluate how those impact veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The full House membership is expected to vote on the VA budget bill (including the report) later this month.
