Company officials initially defended the move as permissible under federal rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The checks were part of a $2 trillion economic stability package passed by Congress last month designed to help families cover immediate debts and expenses related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/coronavirus\/\" target=_blank>the coronavirus outbreak<\/a>, which has sickened more than 600,000 Americans and closed down numerous businesses indefinitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 22 million Americans have filed for unemployment benefits in the last month, according to the Department of Labor.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/04\/15\/veterans-affairs-patient-deaths-from-coronavirus-have-increased-five-fold-since-april-1\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"186\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6309425567_18041e7a82_o.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Veterans Affairs patient deaths from coronavirus have increased five-fold since April 1<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">In addition to the patients, at least 1,100 VA health care employees have tested positive for the virus<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">USAA\u2019s decision to take the emergency funds drew instant criticism from veterans advocates and lawmakers. On Thursday, just a few hours after the practice was made public, the company issued a new statement saying it would pause collections on negative account balances for 90 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeginning as early as today, we will apply this policy retroactively to any member accounts with a negative balance at the time the first stimulus checks were deposited, so that members will have access to their stimulus funds,\u201d USAA spokesperson Matthew Hartwig said in a statement to Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis will allow members access to their full stimulus payment to help cover the costs of rent, food and other important necessities. Beginning as early as today, we will apply this policy retroactively to any member accounts with a negative balance at the time the first stimulus checks were deposited, so that members will have access to their stimulus funds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several watchdog groups have warned in recent days that the emergency payouts \u2014 up to $1,200 per individual plus another $500 per dependent, based on family earnings \u2014 could be vulnerable to seizure or interference from financial institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link cleared from isolation after having no symptoms for a full week.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the payouts delivered so far have been transmitted to the last bank account attached to individuals\u2019 2018 tax returns, giving those companies power over access to the money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hartwig noted that USAA has launched several other initiatives designed to help customers during the coronavirus pandemic, including a 20 percent credit on two months of car insurance premiums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The firm boasts more than 13 million customers who are current and former military personnel, or their family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans advocates hailed the company\u2019s reversal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVeterans Education Success congratulates USAA on fixing this problem so quickly and on prioritizing
