{"id":96672,"date":"2020-01-14T21:32:30","date_gmt":"2020-01-14T21:32:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/01\/14\/the-hummer-is-coming-back-as-an-electric-truck\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T09:28:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T09:28:53","slug":"the-hummer-is-coming-back-as-an-electric-truck","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/off-duty\/2020\/01\/14\/the-hummer-is-coming-back-as-an-electric-truck\/","title":{"rendered":"The Hummer is coming back as an electric truck"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hummer name has been synonymous for years with rugged off-road-capable vehicles that look just as mean as the terrain they\u2019re said to handle without breaking a sweat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dormant for nearly a decade, Hummers are apparently coming back in a big way, albeit with a huge twist&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of a gas guzzler that emits a throaty roar whenever the throttle goes down, the latest (and supposedly greatest) Hummers to hit the consumer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auto123.com\/en\/news\/hummer-gmc-electric-truck-super-bowl\/66639\/\" target=\"_blank\">market in the coming years will be electric<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, you read that right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An electric Hummer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"885\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1024px-ANA_humvee_in_2009_cropped.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-95178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1024px-ANA_humvee_in_2009_cropped.jpg.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1024px-ANA_humvee_in_2009_cropped.jpg.jpg?resize=300,259 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1024px-ANA_humvee_in_2009_cropped.jpg.jpg?resize=768,664 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">An Afghan National Army doing a route clearance patrol exercise at the Kabul Military Training Center (Photo ISAF)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/this-day-in-history\/the-origins-of-the-hummer\" target=\"_blank\">produced by AM General<\/a> and then later sold under the General Motors brand, Hummers were the civilian offshoot of the military\u2019s HMMWV (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle), an extremely adaptable do-everything truck that superseded the ages-old jeep in frontline service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the flagship model dubbed the H1 and revamped with creature comforts including noise insulation, stereos, and plush seats, Hummer made its way into the civilian market in the early 90s in the years following Operation Desert Storm and, suffice to say, H1s were an instant hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, not all good things last and the brand\u2019s popularity declined rapidly with the advent of the H2 and H3 models \u2014 drastic departures from the original H1. (AP Photo\/Rebecca Blackwell)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fast forwarding to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motortrend.com\/news\/2022-hummer-electric-pickup-truck-report\/\" target=\"_blank\">2020 and GM\u2019s big announcement<\/a>, the chief question still remains \u2014 could the revived Hummer bring the brand back to its roots with a rugged offroader that not only puts other vehicles in its class to shame in the looks department, but also performs like an apocalypse-ready battle machine?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chances are that might not be the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new Hummer line will be revived first as a small truck, then later on an SUV, under the GMC brand which is more commonly known for luxury-level SUVs and trucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An all-electric powertrain could certainly produce insane amounts of torque, making short bouts of offroading potentially fun, and unforgiving terrain slightly more accessible. Range and refueling, however, would be an obvious concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new Hummers won\u2019t hit GMC dealerships before 2022, giving GM enough time to fine-tune their product and test the waters, especially with competition like Tesla\u2019s Cybertruck, also marketed as an outdoorsy-type vehicle, making their commercial appearance just around the same
