Anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2019\/03\/18\/spying-for-china-former-us-intel-officer-army-vet-pleads-guilty-to-attempted-espionage\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-824401954.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Spying for China: Former US intel officer, Army vet pleads guilty to attempted espionage<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Ron Rockwell Hansen, 59, was arrested by the FBI in June as he was trying to board a flight for China.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hansen\u2019s statement was punctuated by muffled cries from his family and friends who packed the courtroom and held hands during the hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March, Hansen pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to gather or deliver national defense information to aid a foreign government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Syracuse, Utah, resident was approached by foreign agents while he was working as a contractor for the U.S. government in China. Authorities say they offered him hundreds of thousands of dollars if he would pass along technology and information about U.S. military and intelligence issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hansen had spent more than 20 years in the U.S. Army, including time with the Defense Intelligence Agency. He left the military in 2006 and spent several months as a civilian case officer with the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several years after he left the U.S. government, Hanson told authorities he attended trade conferences on behalf of China and shared information he gathered with officials connected to Chinese intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charging documents allege he transferred forensic software worth several thousand dollars, in violation of export controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prosecutors claimed he was paid as much as $800,000 over several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was arrested in June 2018 on his way to a Washington airport, where prosecutors say he planned to board a flight to China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. District Judge Dee Benson reduced the 15-year sentence called for in plea agreement after considering Hansen\u2019s cooperation with investigators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe has tried to do what he can to make things right,\u201d Benson said. \u201cIt\u2019s a very serious crime that speaks for itself, and we\u2019re all sorry it happened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Lund said the information Hansen provided will help U.S. officials assess how foreign agents target Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don Hansen, the defendant\u2019s older brother, said the reduced sentence was better than his family was expecting. The judge also recommended five years of supervised release following prison time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re pleased Ron recognized his mistake and we\u2019re ready
