ALBANY, N.Y. – New York Naval Militia Rear Admiral Ten Eyck “Trip” Powell III has been selected as next commander of the state’s volunteer naval force.
The Coeymans (KWEE-muhns) resident will replace Naval Militia Major General Robert Wolf, who is retiring in December.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the change on Tuesday. He said the state’s volunteer naval force has responded to emergencies like Superstorm Sandy and other natural disasters.
The New York Naval Militia is a 2,700-member force composed mainly of Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard Reserve members who also agree to serve in the state force in addition to their federal reserve duty.
The Naval Militia was organized in 1889 as the naval equivalent of the New York National Guard prior to the establishment of the Naval Reserve in 1915.
