From a day trip to a weeklong (or longer) commitment, troops and veterans nationwide can share their passion for motorcycles with like-minded riders — all while raising money and awareness for causes or campaigns that are critical to the military community.

This trio of rides is by no means an exhaustive list of what’s available to service members and veterans seeking a day or more out on the open road. Check with installation-based riding groups or local veteran groups in your area for charity rides and other outings near you.

First time with a group? Most large rides will have “ride captains” in charge of keeping the pack together and providing any information you might need. Find your captain or an experienced rider, follow their lead and go.

LEGION LEGACY

What: The American Legion Legacy Run, Aug. 19-23.

Where: Leaving from Post 68 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the ride covers five states en route to Post 102 in Anoka, Minnesota.

Why: Proceeds from the 13th annual run go to the Legion’s Legacy Scholarship Fund, which gives money to the children of fallen and disabled service members. Last year’s ride raised $555,000, with total donations to the fund from the American Legion Riders and Legion departments topping $1.3 million. The Legion Riders are aiming at between $1.5 and $2 million this year, national chairman Bob Sussan said.

Stops and sights: Riders will visit the Indian Motorcycle factory, National World War I Museum and Memorial, Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and the Spam Museum in Austin, Minnesota — about 150 million pounds of the canned meat accompanied U.S. troops into World War II.

Size: Sussan said he expects 350 to 400 riders to complete the full ride this year, with dozens more taking part for a day or two along the 1,100-mile route.

RIDE THE ROCKIES

What: The 31st annual Colorado POW/MIA Recognition Ride, on Aug. 18.

Where: Beginning in Woodland Park, Colorado (about 90 minutes northwest of Fort Carson), the ride ends in Cripple Creek, site of a three-day gathering known as the Salute to American Veterans Rally.

Why: The ride has been in place since the 1980s, raising awareness for missing and imprisoned soldiers.

Stops and sights: The ride itself covers just 26 miles, but Cripple Creek offers everything a rider could want from a frontier town — mine tours, campsites with views of Pikes Peak, and multiple casinos.

Size: Thousands of veterans and supporters participate in the three-day festival.

BULL RUN, REVISITED

What: Bull Run III, hosted by the Northern Virginia chapter of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, on July 28.

Where: An 85-mile ride through Shenandoah National Park and into the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, ending at the Shenandoah Veterans of Foreign Wars post.

Why: Even a low-level Civil War buff is aware of the two battles of Bull Run, but the third is a modern creation, coined by veterans seeking to raise funds for service members who suffered traumatic brain injury or post-traumatic stress after time in Iraq or Afghanistan. Money raised from the ride goes to the Virginia Veteran and Family Support program.

Stops and sights: The scenery of Shenandoah National Park should be enticing enough. If that’s not your speed, the end of the ride comes with a barbecue, bar and plenty of vendors to help with your next custom job.

Size: Between 400 and 500 bikes take part in the annual event, organizers said. It’s one of many rides sponsored by CVMA chapters across the country; the association launched in 2002 and has members in all 50 states, overseas in Europe and Asia, and in uniform, including those currently earning their “combat veteran” status in combat zones.

Sure, it takes time to wash it and dry it, then wax and polish it, but there’s something very spiritual about the whole process (at least there can be). Although he was best known for his jumps on Harley-Davidson XR750s, the bike Knievel rode at Caesars was a 650cc Triumph T120. Knievel cleared the fountains on that fateful night, but in the end things went horribly wrong — a surprise deceleration of the bike on takeoff resulted in a botched landing, with Evel hitting the ramp and then the pavement, sliding into the Dunes parking lot.

With more than 40 broken bones and a concussion, Knievel spent 29 days in a reported coma.

Now, ex-motocrosser and rally racer, and still-stuntman and truck racer (and, oh yeah, Nitro Circus co-founder and occasional competitor) Travis Pastrana is set to recreate the famously failed attempt at Caesars, but it’ll be on a motorcycle brand that wasn’t even in business back then — an Indian.

It’s a stunt concocted by “action sports collective” Nitro Circus and Indian Motorcycle, but Pastrana will be doing all the work, using the championship-winning Indian Scout FTR750 to attempt three of Knievel’s most famed jumps, including jumping 52-plus crushed cars (to surpass Evel’s event), a jump of 16 Greyhound buses (to re-create Evel’s stunt), and capping things off (hopefully) with the Caesars Palace fountain jump.

The event will be presented live (of course) on “Evel Live,” on Sunday, July 8, on History in partnership with Nitro Circus. If successful, Pastrana will be the first individual to complete all three jumps in three hours.

“It was extremely important to use a motorcycle similar to the ones Evel jumped. The Indian Scout FTR750 is just that, a modern-day evolution of flat-track motorcycles of the past,” Pastrana said. “It has the power I need and handles well, but I’m only going to have a few days to get comfortable on it, not to mention I’ve never jumped a V-twin before.”

The Indian Scout FTR750 is far different from the lighter motocrossers Pastrana usually jumps; for one thing, it rolls with a 750cc V-twin and an adjustable Öhlins monoshock on the rear. We’ll definitely be tuning in to see just how Pastrana handles that big flat-tracker in the air.

The Good Ride Salutes USAG Stuttgart will honor U.S. soldiers with an Armed Forces Day ride from Stuttgart through the picturesque Black Forest and German countryside. Afterward, there’s a good-old barbecue and live music, with the Good Ride experience available to a community of more than 20,000 active military and their families.

In support of Good Ride Salutes USAG Stuttgart, Indian Motorcycle is also running a test-ride promotion to raise up to $30,000 for the Infinite Hero Foundation. As the main beneficiary of Hart’s Good Ride Rally, Infinite Hero funds programs that offer accessibility to effective treatments for military heroes and their families dealing with service-related injuries.

To look the part in photos for a recent comparison ride between a batch of 2018 Harley-Davidsons, I wore an open-face helmet and my trusty pair of Wayfarers. After a day on the road dodging windblast from semis, my eyes were bloodshot and I probably failed to convince anyone that I was a real badass cruiser guy — which is fine because “badass” and “cruiser guy” are two things I’ve never been called.

Maybe I have an oddly shaped head or something (I always thought it was intermediate-oval) because I looked ridiculous wearing an open-face helmet. It figures, considering I’ve never been able to wear any type of hat — baseball cap, beanie, whatever — that doesn’t make my wife laugh at me. I don’t know what it is, but regardless of what I put on my head I look like a bearded cherubim wearing a tea cozy.

Not to mention the obvious sacrifice in protection, I found wearing an open-face helmet made my favorite pastime considerably less pleasant. My face was raw with windburn, my nose was sunburned, my contact lenses felt spot-welded to my eyeballs, and my beard reeked of diesel fumes. Good thing SoCal isn’t swarming with pterodactyl-size bugs this time of year.

As I was gritting my teeth in the wind, I couldn’t help but mentally compile a list of full-face helmets I’d rather be wearing and that would look appropriate in the photos. In addition to considerably improving levels of safety and comfort, any one of these helmets will look great with black denim, raked front ends, and wrapped exhausts.

Simpson Ghost Bandit

Racing the quarter-mile is as uniquely American as cruising the boulevard on a hot-rodded Harley. The Simpson Ghost Bandit is a modern take on the drag helmet from the folks who practically created the type. The helmet features full carbon-fiber construction and an incorporated sun visor. At $450, it’s a deal. If you want to go more basic, the Simpson Street Bandit can be had for $300.

Bell MX-9 Adventure

Its MX front vent and conspicuous rear venting make it look like a 1980s vision of a dystopian future. That’s kind of the perfect look for a lot of cruisers, right? The helmet features Bell’s MiPS technology to help reduce rotational forces in the event of an impact.

Arai Defiant-X

Like every Arai, the Defiant-X is constructed by hand in the Saitama Prefecture factory. Also, like every Arai, its pillow-soft interior alone justifies its north-of-$600 price point. Arai cleverly integrated an internal mechanism to operate the chin vents so as not to clutter its classic lines. The Defiant-X has the most subtle design here, which means it will look equally at home worn by a CVO rider on the street or a Speedway racer slinging it sideways at the local track.

Les Ateliers Ruby Castel

Heck, Keira Knightley wore an open-face model in a Chanel perfume ad (it didn’t even give her helmet hair!). Ruby also makes that other essential piece of protective gear: the silk scarf.

The Castel is a full-face design that features Ruby’s signature spine running down the center of the helmet. It’s available with chrome, leather, or rubber trim. Inside, there’s a lambskin and nappa calfskin lining. Rather than a standard visor, the Castel features a goggle-style, leather-wrapped visor. You know it’s fancy when the spec list boasts that the helmet comes in “a beautiful red Ruby box.” Are you supposed to keep the box, or what?

All joking aside, it’s one sweet lid and I’d love to rock one the next time I swing a leg over a cruiser. At about $1,400 it’s about the price of an AGV Pista GP R, but it will look way more appropriate on a Panhead chopper than Rossi’s lid would. Its circular chin vents give the Castel a medieval look that sets it apart from other retro lids.

It’s also available in some really killer paint schemes. If a blue metalflake paint job and leopard print interior aren’t your thing, Ruby has options for those less bold as well.

It’s like a grown-up Erector set. The helmet features full carbon-fiber construction and is ECE certified.
