The allowance compensates service members for nonhousing expenses in areas where these costs exceed the national average by more than 8 percent. To calculate your monthly allowance, multiply the payout rate for your paygrade and years of service by the figure next to your duty station in the list of qualifying locations. Members with command-sponsored dependents residing in the vicinity of the member&#8217;s duty station receive the &#8220;with dependents&#8221; rate.
