One U.S. service member was killed in Afghanistan<\/a> Tuesday, U.S. officials said in a short press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NATO\u2019s Resolute Support<\/a> mission to train and advise Afghan government forces said that the incident is under investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn accordance with U.S. Department of Defense policy, the name of the service member killed in action is being withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin is complete,” the press release reads. “We will share additional information as appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest death comes less than a week after Sgt. Cameron Meddock<\/a>, an Army Ranger, died from wounds he suffered while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan\u2019s Badghis province, and while the Taliban are holding another round of peace talks with an American diplomatic team in Doha, Qatar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad<\/a>, who is leading the U.S. diplomatic team in the quest for a political settlement to the Afghan conflict, said Sunday that the negotiations were going well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust completed [the] Pakistan leg of my current trip in the region to advance the peace process. Good meetings. I appreciate their hospitality [and] resolve to push for Afghan peace,\u201d Khalilzad said over Twitter. \u201cWe\u2019re heading in the right direction with more steps by Pakistan coming that will lead to concrete results.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
