{"id":11265,"date":"2019-01-11T21:23:58","date_gmt":"2019-01-11T21:23:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/01\/11\/behold-a-cac-free-future\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:08:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:08:48","slug":"behold-a-cac-free-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/01\/11\/behold-a-cac-free-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Behold, a CAC-free future!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy is moving a step closer to letting sailors access their personnel records on cellphones and tablets without bothering with common access card authentication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sailors away from their commands have to use the cumbersome CAC to log in now, but that will change if ongoing tests of MyNavy Portal\u2019s MyRecord Mobile App are successful, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/bupers-npc\/reference\/messages\/Documents\/NAVADMINS\/NAV2019\/NAV19008.txt\" target=_blank>NavAdmin message 008\/17<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Navy is committed to transforming how it delivers human resources services \u2014 personnel, pay and training \u2014 to our sailors,\u201d said Chief of Navy Personnel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/cnp\/\" target=_blank>Vice Adm. Robert Burke,<\/a> in a Jan. 9 press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We are committed to expanding CAC-less services with the same level of security and convenience sailors expect from their personal banking services. In time, sailors will be able to conduct all personnel transactions using their mobile device.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/09\/17\/its-like-linkedin-for-the-navy\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"164\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Hull2.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">It\u2019s like LinkedIn for the Navy<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The innovation comes alongside an ongoing reworking of the Navy\u2019s rating structure and training systems so that the service can offer more career options than ever before to sailors.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Burke, the Navy\u2019s top personnel officer, has been campaigning to modernize the service\u2019s human resources information technology systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He hopes upgrades will eventually allow sailors to negotiate their orders on their smart phones, among other innovations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But first the Navy has to test the CAC-less system\u2019s security technology so that sailors can safely access sensitive material. That\u2019s what the service is doing now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To try the app, sailors must start a multi-step registration and installation process. It begins with enabling the CAC-free setup from a desktop computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After sailors install the application and complete the login on their phones or tablets, they should be able to view a \u201cread only\u201d version of some, but not all, of their personnel data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main goal of the beta testing is to evaluate the security of the app. Officials plan to roll out access to more records in the coming months, once they\u2019re assured the security system works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why they\u2019re cautioning sailors to not rely on the app when they\u2019re reviewing their records to prepare for selection boards.
