He said a U.S. reconnaissance aircraft had joined what he described as a \u201cprovocation\u201d to test Russia\u2019s response. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2021\/06\/23\/russia-says-warning-shots-deter-uk-warship-london-denies-it\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/UK-ship.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Russia says warning shots deter UK warship; London denies it<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The incident on Wednesday marks the first time since the Cold War era that Moscow has claimed to have used live ammunition to deter a NATO warship, reflecting soaring Russia-West tensions.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Britain, which like most other nations didn\u2019t recognize Russia\u2019s 2014 annexation of Crimea, insisted the Defender wasn\u2019t fired upon and said it was sailing in Ukrainian waters. \u201cHMS Defender was conducting innocent passage through Ukrainian territorial waters in accordance with international law,\u201d Britain\u2019s Defense Ministry said Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked if the events could have triggered a global war, Putin responded that the West wouldn\u2019t risk a full-scale conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven if we had sunk that ship, it would be hard to imagine that it would put the world on the brink of World War III because those who do it know that they can\u2019t emerge as winners in that war, and it\u2019s very important,\u201d Putin said. But on the other hand, they are trying to secure their monopolist stance, resulting in threats and destructive action such as drills, provocations and sanctions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2021\/04\/20\/russia-defends-restricting-foreign-navy-ships-off-crimea-amid-troop-buildup-near-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">the West doesn\u2019t recognize Crimea as part of Russia<\/a>, Putin said the naval incident took the controversy to a new level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey don\u2019t recognize something \u2014 OK, they can keep refusing to recognize it,\u201d he said. \u201cBut why conduct such provocations?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Putin insisted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2021\/02\/01\/russian-jet-buzzes-us-warship-in-the-black-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\">Russia would firmly defend its interests<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are fighting for ourselves and our future on our own territory,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not us who traveled thousands of kilometers (miles) to come to them; it\u2019s them who have come to our borders and violated our territorial waters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/2021\/02\/01\/russian-jet-buzzes-us-warship-in-the-black-sea\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Donald-Cook2.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Russian jet buzzes US warship in the Black Sea<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The actions of the Russian Sukhoi Su-24 &quot;were inconsistent with good airmanship and international norms and standards,&quot; said a spokesman for U.S. 6th Fleet.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dmitri Trenin, the director of the Carnegie Moscow Center, warned that last week\u2019s Black Sea incident presages a new, riskier level of confrontation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFresh attempts to expose Russian \u2018red line\u2019 deterrence as hollow \u2014 whether on the ground, in the air, or at sea \u2014 would push Moscow to defend what it cannot give up without losing its self-respect,\u201d Trenin said in a commentary. \u201cThis would almost inevitably lead to clashes and casualties, which would carry the risk of further escalation. Should this happen, Russia-NATO confrontation would deteriorate literally to the point of brinkmanship, a truly bleak scenario.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Putin on Wednesday also reaffirmed his claim of a close kinship between the Russian and Ukrainian people, but accused Kyiv of hostility toward Russia and voiced doubt about the value of a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling him a Western pawn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy meet Zelenskyy if he has put his country under full foreign control and key issues for Ukraine are decided not in Kyiv but in Washington, and, to a certain extent, Paris and Berlin?\u201d Putin asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ukraine\u2019s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba retorted by tweeting that Putin wishes Ukraine\u2019s issues were decided in Moscow. \u201cThis is our country and it\u2019s only up to us to decide our fate,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year, Russia bolstered its forces near Ukraine and warned that Moscow could intervene if Kyiv used force to reclaim areas in the east controlled by Russia-backed separatists since a conflict there erupted in 2014. Moscow later pulled back some troops, but Ukrainian authorities said the bulk of them remain close to the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Putin spent most of the four-hour \u201cDirect Line\u201d show discussing domestic issues \u2014 typical for the tightly choreographed annual rite that helps him polish his image as a strong leader caring for people\u2019s needs. It didn\u2019t feature any questions about Russia\u2019s beleaguered opposition and Putin\u2019s most prominent political foe, Alexei Navalny, who is in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He voiced hope the country could avoid a nationwide coronavirus lockdown amid a surge of new infections. Reported deaths in Russia hit a daily record Wednesday, with authorities reporting 669, but Putin said decisions by regional officials to make vaccinations mandatory for some workers should help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia has been registering over 20,000 new coronavirus cases and about 600 deaths every day since June 24. On Wednesday, 21,042 new infections were recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russian officials blame the June surge on Russians\u2019 lax attitude toward taking precautions, more infectious variants, and a low rate of vaccinations, which experts attribute to widespread hesitancy to get the shot and limited vaccine production. Although Russia was among the first countries to deploy a vaccine, just over 15% of the population has received at least one shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amid this hesitancy, Putin revealed he received the Sputnik V vaccine. Putin got his first shot in late March out of the public eye and has remained tight-lipped about which vaccine he chose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On other issues, Putin said Russia has no intention of banning Western social media platforms but emphasized that the government merely wants them to abide by the law, promptly remove inappropriate content and open offices in Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe tell them: \u2018You\u2019re spreading child pornography, or instructions on (how to commit) suicide, or how to create Molotov cocktails. &#8230; You must take it down,\u2019 and they simply don\u2019t listen, don\u2019t want to listen to what we tell them,\u201d Putin said. \u201cBut this is wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
