He said there is strong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2019\/01\/23\/us-house-votes-overwhelmingly-to-bar-us-exit-from-nato\/\" target=_blank>bipartisan support for NATO<\/a> in the U.S. and that words are being matched by deeds as the U.S. increases its military presence in Europe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA strong NATO is good for Europe, but it\u2019s also good for the United States,\u201d Stoltenberg said. \u201cIt\u2019s a great advantage for the United States to have 28 friends and allies.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/congress\/2019\/05\/23\/senates-pentagon-budget-bill-would-obstruct-trump-from-leaving-nato\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-996143054.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Senate\u2019s Pentagon budget bill would obstruct Trump from leaving NATO<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">In a bipartisan fashion, the Senate Armed Services Committee is showing its support for the NATO alliance.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New York Times reported earlier this year that President Donald Trump had privately said several times in 2018 that he wanted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2019\/01\/17\/trump-says-us-backs-nato-100-after-report-he-discussed-withdrawal\/\" target=_blank>withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stoltenberg said, however, that Trump\u2019s message about allied nations needing to spend more on defense was having an impact. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause what we see now is that European allies and Canada are stepping up,\u201d he said. \u201cAfter years of cutting defense spending, all allies are starting to increase defense spending. More allies are meeting the 2 percent guideline,\u201d he said, referring to the proportion of GDP spent on defense. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/04\/02\/trump-nato-members-must-do-more-to-raise-defense-spending\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP19092682055458.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Trump: NATO members must do more to raise defense spending<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">President Donald Trump on Tuesday praised NATO countries for increasing their financial contributions to the Western alliance, but he\u2019s still hounding them to pay even more, saying the United States still shoulders a disproportionate share of the cost of protecting Europe.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stoltenberg said Russia was to blame for the demise on Friday of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/08\/02\/landmark-us-russia-arms-control-treaty-is-dead\/\" target=_blank>Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty<\/a>. The U.S. withdrew after both sides accused the other of violating the Cold War-era agreement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have called on Russia again and again to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2019\/02\/13\/nato-is-getting-ready-for-a-russia-with-a-lot-more-missiles\/\" target=\"_blank\">come back into compliance<\/a> because these missiles are mobile, they are hard to detect, nuclear capable, and they can reach European cities within minutes,\u201d Stoltenberg said. \u201cAnd therefore they also reduce the threshold of any potential use of nuclear weapons in armed conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While in New Zealand this week, Stoltenberg visited the Al Noor mosque in Christchurch which was one of two mosques where a gunman killed 51 people in March. The attack had similarities to a 2011 attack in Norway when a right-wing extremist killed 77 people. Stoltenberg was Norway\u2019s prime minister at the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot so many years ago we all thought that terrorism was something that was organized outside our own countries,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat we\u2019ve learned now is that terrorism also comes from the inside.
