Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center<\/a> in Clarksburg, West Virginia, pled guilty to seven counts of second degree murder and one count of attempted murder last summer for the crimes, which occurred in 2017 and 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before her sentencing Tuesday morning, Mays, 46, offered a partial apology to the families of her victims in the West Virginia courtroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are no words I can say that can offer the families any comfort,\u201d she said in a prepared statement. \u201cI can only say I\u2019m sorry for the pain I caused them and my family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/07\/14\/former-va-health-worker-charged-with-multiple-murder-counts-accused-of-poisoning-patients-with-insulin\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/killernurse.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Former VA health worker pleads guilty to murdering seven patients with insulin poisoning<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The nursing assistant was fired in 2018 after concerns were raised by fellow hospital workers.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Judge Thomas Kleeh rejected her attorney\u2019s arguments for leniency in the sentencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese were no mercy killings,\u201d he said. \u201cYou knew what you were doing&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is nothing in your history, and nothing about your characteristics that justifies or explains your heinous actions with respect to these eight veterans, these eight fathers, these eight grandfathers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kleeh noted that Mays is ineligible for parole. In addition to the seven life imprisonment charges, she was also sentenced an additional 20 years on the attempted murder charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case has cast a pall over the West Virginia VA hospital since 2017. Federal investigators have probed Mays\u2019 background and hospital procedures in the years since, and on Tuesday the VA Inspector General\u2019s office offered the results of its own 100-page investigation into both May\u2019s actions and the failings of other VA staff to prevent the crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report for the first time offered a motive for the crimes, noting that Mays told law enforcement officials after her guilty pleas last summer that \u201cshe administered insulin to patients she believed were suffering so that they could pass \u2018gently,\u2019\u201d and \u201cthese actions have her a sense of control\u201d over chaos in her personal life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of the patients who died from her actions were considered to be in a terminal medical state, health officials noted. Federal prosecutors said several were expected to be discharged from the hospital within weeks of their poisoning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before her sentencing, family members were given a chance to offer remembrances of the victims and push for a harsher jail sentence for Mays. All seven of the patients she was charged with murdering were men aged 80 or older, and their loved ones lamented lost time that could have been spent with children and grandchildren because of her actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In court on Tuesday, Mays\u2019 lawyers noted that she suffered post-traumatic stress disorder and military sexual assault during her own time serving in the Army, which resulted significant personal use and abuse of mental health medications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they also said that \u201cno one knows why\u201d Mays made the decision to end multiple patients\u2019 lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The inspector general\u2019s report noted multiple failures by Veterans Affairs officials in patient monitoring, medication security and hiring practices that contributed to Mays\u2019 actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMedication rooms and carts were not secured on the ward where Mays worked, giving her unauthorized access to the insulin used in these deaths,\u201d the report states. \u201cThe pharmacy service also did not have a formal process to track medications that could have signaled the suspicious rise in hypoglycemic events.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigators noted that local VA hiring officials did not fully complete background checks on Mays which could have alerted them to past reports of excessive force during a previous job as a prison guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supervisors also did not note \u201cknown problems with her patient care\u201d in performance assessments, including \u201codd or aggressive behavior toward patients at times, typically attributed to stress in Mays\u2019 personal life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, acting Under Secretary of Health Dr. Richard Stone said that reforms are underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVA deeply regrets that Ms. Mays\u2019 actions were not discovered sooner and stopped,\u201d he wrote in response to the report. \u201cKnowing that she is behind bars is not enough.
