It will be gone. They will sleep well tonight,\u201d Trump told a crowd of veterans at the annual AMVETS convention in Louisville, Ky. \u201cThat&#8217;s hundreds of millions of dollars in student debt held by our severely wounded warriors. It is gone forever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/07\/01\/disabled-vets-could-see-their-student-loan-debts-automatically-erased\/\" target=_blank>Veterans who are 100 percent disabled<\/a> are already eligible to have their federal student loan debt completely erased, but government officials have struggled to get all of that group to take advantage of the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/07\/01\/disabled-vets-could-see-their-student-loan-debts-automatically-erased\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5247045.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Disabled vets could see their student loan debts automatically erased<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Bipartisan legislation would automatically drop all federal student loan debt for eligible veterans.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite a public education campaign on the assistance over the last year by the Departments of Education and Veterans Affairs, about 25,000 veterans eligible for the program still have not signed on. Federal officials say many of those have already defaulted on federal loans, creating additional financial problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year, Rep. Connor Lamb, D-Pa. and Senate Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., each sponsored legislation to make the loan forgiveness automatic, putting the impetus of clearing the debt on federal agencies instead of the veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump\u2019s announcement on Wednesday appears to be looking at the same idea. In a separate fact sheet put out by White House officials, they described the sign up process as \u201ctoo burdensome\u201d and said the goal of the new memorandum is to ensure \u201cdisabled veterans have their federal student loan debt discharged with minimal burdens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement came amid a wide-ranging speech on veterans and military issues by the commander-in-chief, who touted both his administration\u2019s work in reforming VA policies and Defense Department spending as crucial to national security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The legislation under consideration in Congress includes loan forgiveness for federal student loans that disabled veterans take out for their children\u2019s education. Trump did not say what the scope of his new order will entail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">White House officials said the average federal debt carried by the disabled veterans is around $30,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans who think they may be eligible for the debt forgiveness program can visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.disabilitydischarge.com\/\"
