{"id":13787,"date":"2020-05-28T19:58:29","date_gmt":"2020-05-28T19:58:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/05\/28\/cops-no-charges-in-fatal-sailor-on-sailor-shooting\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:55:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:55:49","slug":"cops-no-charges-in-fatal-sailor-on-sailor-shooting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/05\/28\/cops-no-charges-in-fatal-sailor-on-sailor-shooting\/","title":{"rendered":"Cops: No charges in fatal sailor-on-sailor shooting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No charges will be filed in the fatal accidental shooting of a sailor by another sailor last month, police have confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Machinist\u2019s Mate Nuclear 3rd Class <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=1002506109953586\" target=_blank>Dakota Ray Hering<\/a>, 20, was killed on April 7 in Goose Creek, South Carolina, according to Navy and police records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hering had been renting a house with other sailors there while attending school at the Nuclear Power Training Unit in nearby Charleston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When police arrived that evening, 20-year-old Cody Watlington immediately told officers \u201cit was an accident,\u201d according to Goose Creek police records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWatlington stated that he was showing Hering how to field strip a handgun,\u201d the responding officer wrote. \u201cWatlington advised that he was demonstrating a feature of the handgun, which required having to depress the trigger to force the slide forward off the slide rail.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/05\/14\/this-sub-just-wrapped-up-a-30-month-deployment\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/uss-florida-homecoming.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This submarine just wrapped up a 30-month deployment<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The guided-missile boat Florida returned to Georgia last week.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWatlington then states that he must have accidentally pulled the slide far enough back to chamber a round\u201d the report states. \u201cWatlington advised that he had the handgun pointed at Hering and depressed the trigger to force the slide forward from the slide rail and accidentally discharged a round, striking Hering in the chest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One sailor witness told police he believed the shooting was the result of \u201cpoor gun safety.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hering was declared dead at the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to have played a role and the sailors in the house all got along, according to records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was determined no criminal charges would be filed against the subject that accidentally discharged the firearm,\u201d Good Creek Police spokesman Capt. Tom Hill told Navy Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Goose Creek police reported that all six occupants of the house were sailors, Cmdr. James Stockman, a spokesman for Naval Education and Training Command, declined to release biographical information on the other sailors who were present since no charges were filed \u201cand due to privacy concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stockman said no disciplinary action against any of the sailors was pending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hering\u2019s father, Steven Hering, said the family accepted that his son\u2019s fatal shooting was accidental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey always tell you in the military, safety first,\u201d he told Navy Times this week. \u201cDouble check yourself before you think something\u2019s unloaded.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSomething like this could have been prevented,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, Steven Hering said he felt like \u201csome punishment should be handed down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hering had recently graduated from nuke school in South Carolina and was supposed to be home, but COVID-19 rendered that impossible due to the Pentagon\u2019s stop-movement order, his father said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI hear people complaining about spending all their hours with their kids,\u201d Steven Hering said of stay-at-home orders. \u201cWe\u2019d give anything to have them all together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/05\/20\/two-charged-in-connection-with-sailor-overdose-death-on-aircraft-carrier\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Fentanyl-Pills1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Two charged in connection with sailor overdose death on aircraft carrier<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Aviation Boatswain\u2019s Mate (Aircraft Handling) 1st Class James Edward Trice Jr. was found dead on the Carl Vinson on April 18.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Steven Hering said the pandemic made everything harder after his son\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The family only recently received Hering\u2019s personal effects, and his funeral proceeded without military honors, which are now planned for a future time when it is safer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A casualty assistance officer didn\u2019t inform the family of Hering\u2019s death either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, \u201cwe were notified by the county coroner over there in Goose Creek at about 1 o\u2019clock in the morning,\u201d Steven Hering recalled. \u201cWe were all sleeping and got woke up like that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A casualty assistance officer contacted the family the following afternoon, Steven Hering said, but the family struggled with deciphering who to even contact at Hering\u2019s command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI didn\u2019t really bug him too much,\u201d Hering\u2019s father recalled of his son. \u201cI left him to do his own thing and as soon as this happened, I didn\u2019t know who I was supposed to call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stockman, the Navy spokesman, did not answer questions about why a Navy official did not knock on the Herings\u2019 door and deliver the news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen we lose one of our own, the Navy strives to ensure that their family is taken care of,\u201d Stockman said in response to questions about how the family was notified. \u201cIn this case, the primary next of kin was located in Nevada, far from the sailor who was in South Carolina. As such, a Regional Casualty Assistance Calls and Funeral Honors Program director assigned a (casualty assistance officer) to support the Hering family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other problems that Steven Hering attributes to the pandemic hindered the family\u2019s ability to get Hering home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His body was flown to Sacramento because there were no flights coming into Reno, his father said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe missed him coming off the plane,\u201d he said. \u201cIt just seemed that everything that should have been done a certain way didn\u2019t get done after his passing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hering was a ROTC member at his high school who was into computers and volunteered at a South Carolina horse ranch during his time off from school, his father said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMost high school kids, they\u2019re more worried about themselves, but he worried about other people first,\u201d Steven Hering said. \u201cHe just wanted to help people out like
