{"id":14306,"date":"2018-11-21T00:07:43","date_gmt":"2018-11-21T00:07:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/11\/21\/lens-collector-ordered-to-give-up-the-glass\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:56:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:56:06","slug":"lens-collector-ordered-to-give-up-the-glass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/11\/21\/lens-collector-ordered-to-give-up-the-glass\/","title":{"rendered":"Lens collector ordered to give up the glass"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DETROIT \u2014 A judge has ordered a Michigan man to surrender two antique lighthouse lenses worth at least $600,000, months after the collector lost a court battle with the federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2018\/03\/michigan_man_must_return_antiq.html\" target=_blank>Steve Gronow<\/a> was supposed to turn them over last summer. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscg.mil\/\" target=_blank>U.S. Coast Guard <\/a>officials and a lens expert recently went to his mansion in Howell, 50 miles northwest of Detroit, but weren\u2019t allowed through a gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have no interest in putting anyone in jail &#8230; but my orders are not going to be disobeyed,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mied.uscourts.gov\/index.cfm?pageFunction=chambers&#038;judgeid=33\" target=_blank>U.S. District Judge Mark Goldsmith <\/a>said Monday as he gave Gronow until February to produce the lenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government sued Gronow, saying he had no right to lenses from the Spring Point Ledge lighthouse in Maine and the Belle Isle lighthouse in Detroit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1130\" height=\"685\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Light2.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32793\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Light2.jpg.jpg 1130w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Light2.jpg.jpg?resize=300,182 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Light2.jpg.jpg?resize=768,466 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Light2.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,621 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1130px) 100vw, 1130px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Belle Isle Lighthouse, Michigan (Coast Guard)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Maine lighthouse was automated around 1960, and the Detroit lighthouse was replaced in 1930. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gronow bought one lens from a seller on eBay and the other from the Henry County Historical Society in Indiana. The government apparently had lent it to the Indiana group in 1946.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Coast Guard argued that it still owned the lenses. Goldsmith agreed last spring and gave Gronow a few months to surrender them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It is time for the games to end,&#8221; Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter Caplan told the judge, seeking approval to use U.S. marshals and &#8220;all necessary force.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gronow&#8217;s attorney, James Pelland, said Gronow wants to be paid for storing the lenses before he gives them up.
