{"id":14552,"date":"2019-04-02T22:02:33","date_gmt":"2019-04-02T22:02:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/04\/02\/why-the-navy-will-make-fewer-e-9s-this-year\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:51:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:51:35","slug":"why-the-navy-will-make-fewer-e-9s-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/04\/02\/why-the-navy-will-make-fewer-e-9s-this-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Why the Navy will make fewer E-9s this year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chances of making master chief in the active-duty Navy took a dip for the second year in a row.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slightly more than 11 percent of senior chiefs will be advanced to E-9, according to the 2020 active-duty master chief quotas released Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The release of the master chief data kicks off a season of enlisted selection board announcements arriving from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/bupers-npc\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=_blank>Millington, Tennessee.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 11.18 percent selection rate for E-9 is the lowest since the 2009 board, when only 11.01 percent moved up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest figures also mark a two-year decline after three consecutive years of growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just two years ago, 15 percent of senior chiefs were marked for advancement.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/02\/12\/retirement-board-will-send-120-cpos-home-this-year-the-details-you-need-to-know\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/pinning3.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Retirement Board will send 120 CPOs home this year \u2014 the details you need to know<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Navy&#039;s Fiscal Year 2019 Senior Enlisted Continuation Board&#039;s results have been released.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year\u2019s decline is mostly due to fewer vacancies at the Navy\u2019s highest enlisted pay grade. The Navy offered only 377 quotas, 109 fewer than the 486 billets the sea service mandated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/04\/03\/its-getting-harder-to-make-master-chief\/\" target=\"_blank\">last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plummet would\u2019ve been steeper, had the number of eligible E-8 candidates not dipped, too.
