{"id":14562,"date":"2016-03-14T20:29:53","date_gmt":"2016-03-14T20:29:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/03\/14\/navy-airplane-flew-over-midwest-with-trump-flight-id\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:59:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:59:25","slug":"navy-airplane-flew-over-midwest-with-trump-flight-id","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2016\/03\/14\/navy-airplane-flew-over-midwest-with-trump-flight-id\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy airplane flew over Midwest with &#8216;Trump&#8217; flight ID"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This article was published at 5:43 p.m. on March 14 and has been updated.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent weeks, &#8220;TRUMP&#8221; has been flying high over Oklahoma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the flight identifier<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">callsign<\/span> of a\u00a0Navy E-6B command and control aircraft, which has broadcast<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">answered to<\/span> the Republican front-runner\u2019s name on two flights in the run-up to the state&#8217;s\u00a0primaries.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both missions were flown in March by the same E-6B Mercury, a converted Boeing 707 whose TACAMO aircrew\u00a0relays messages\u00a0to the fleet of ballistic missile submarines that lurk around the globe, ready to fire nuclear-armed missiles at the president&#8217;s order.\u00a0TACAMO stands for\u00a0&#8220;take charge and move out.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The E-6B flew missions March 8 and March\u00a013 with flight identifier &#8220;TRUMP,&#8221; which appears not to have swayed enough primary voters \u2014\u00a0Sen. Ted Cruz\u00a0topped\u00a0Donald Trump in the March 14 Republican primary; in\u00a0the Democratic contest,\u00a0Bernie Sanders beat\u00a0Hillary Clinton. In recent months,\u00a0Donald Trump jetted to the Sooner State aboard\u00a0his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-fix\/wp\/2015\/09\/10\/so-which-is-nicer-donald-trumps-plane-or-air-force-one\/\">luxury Boeing 757<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;TRUMP&#8221; was labeled as the call sign on flight status tracker Planefinder.net, but a Naval Air Forces spokeswoman clarified to say that it was actually the plane&#8217;s flight identifier and that its\u00a0call sign on the missions was\u00a0&#8220;ABNET 77.&#8221; She said the flight ID had been set to &#8220;TRUMP&#8221; by an instructor in a training session and that the crew hadn&#8217;t been aware of it and had not verbally answered to &#8220;TRUMP&#8221; on the mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;During the demonstration the instructor manually entered the text &#8216;TRUMP&#8217;\u00a0as an example to illustrate how to enter text on the numerical keypad,&#8221; Cmdr. Jeannie\u00a0Groeneveld said in an email.\u00a0&#8220;After the training concluded, the crew zeroed the transponder but didn&#8217;t realize the flight ID would remain even after zeroing the transponder. When the aircraft was later flown, the transponder broadcasted the last entered flight ID.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aircrew pre-flight checks will be revised to verify flight IDs before every flight,\u00a0Groeneveld added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two E-6B squadrons are based at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma: the &#8220;Ironmen&#8221; of Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron 3 and the &#8220;Shadows&#8221; of VQ-4. The E-6B with flight ID &#8220;TRUMP&#8221; was with VQ-4 but it isn&#8217;t clear who\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">It isn\u2019t known which squadron &#8220;TRUMP&#8221; was with or who <\/span>decided to pick the identifier<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">call sign<\/span>, which was spotted by a Twitter user and reported by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2016\/03\/13\/doomsday-plane-is-using-trump-callsign\/\">The Aviationist<\/a>. The plane appears to have taken off from Oklahoma on March 8 and headed north to Omaha, Nebraska. On previous missions, the Navy E-6B was identified as &#8220;BIGDON3.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also isn\u2019t known whether any <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">other <\/span>E-6B pilots will decide to recognize the state&#8217;s primary victors with handles like\u00a0&#8220;CRUZ&#8221; or\u00a0&#8220;BERNIE.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An E-6B command
