{"id":15030,"date":"2014-09-12T19:19:43","date_gmt":"2014-09-12T19:19:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2014\/09\/12\/judge-orders-restitution-in-coast-guard-shootings\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:06:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:06:56","slug":"judge-orders-restitution-in-coast-guard-shootings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2014\/09\/12\/judge-orders-restitution-in-coast-guard-shootings\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge orders restitution in Coast Guard shootings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span class=\"character dateline\">KODIAK, Alaska \u2013 <\/span> The man convicted of killing two men at a Coast Guard communications station in Kodiak has been ordered to pay nearly $1.5 million to their estates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">James Wells, a civilian expert in radio antennas, was convicted April 25 of killing co-workers Richard Belisle and Petty Officer 1st Class James Hopkins on April 12, 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was sentenced July 8 to four consecutive life terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. District Judge Ralph Beistline Wednesday ordered Wells to pay $770,470 to Belisle&#8217;s estate and $713,005 to Hopkins&#8217; estate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kodiakdailymirror.com\/view\/full_story\/25765567\/article-Wells-ordered-to-pay-%241-4-million---Civil-suit-awaits-trial-date?instance=news_top_story\">The Kodiak Daily Mirror<\/a> reports the victims&#8217; widows in April sued Wells for wrongful death. Kodiak attorney Jill Wittenbrader is representing Nicola Belisle and Deborah Hopkins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wittenbrader says the court has not set a trial in the civil
