Adam Wellington, 37, will be soaring over Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, in an F-35B Lightning II, the Corps\u2019 new vertical takeoff fighter jet, as the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs kick off the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wellington is a member of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 501, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, out of Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m very excited to participate in the flyover. (AP Photo\/Doug Benc)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A native of Sac City, Iowa, and a University of Iowa graduate, Wellington previously flew an F-18 Hornet in multiple deployments to the Middle East and Japan, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radioiowa.com\/2020\/01\/31\/sac-city-native-part-of-superbowl-flyover-sunday\/\">Radio Iowa<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for the flyover for the year\u2019s most important football game, Wellington says the pilots approach it as they would any other mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe don\u2019t do anything during a flyover we don\u2019t normally do during everyday flight operations,&#8221; Wellington said. \u201cFlying formation and being somewhere at a specific time are skills we train every day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps pilot, who said he\u2019s a Chicago Bears fan, said he will \u201cprobably be\u201d cheering on the Chiefs on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pilots intend to catch the halftime show, which features Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, as well as the second half of the game, according to Radio Iowa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Super Bowl LIV will air on Fox at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time on Feb. 2, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/2020\/01\/30\/marine-corps-member-represent-iowa-during-super-bowl-liv\/2854167001\/\">The Des Moines Register<\/a> first reported this story.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI\u2019m very excited to participate in the flyover.
