In some ways, he didn\u2019t know what he didn\u2019t know\u2014how to navigate the job market, how to sell his formidable skills, how to hone in on an appropriate salary. But he was determined to find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s this huge wall that exists between most hiring practices and veterans,\u201d said Klobucher, of Sheboygan, Wis. \u201cYou can\u2019t just go in and say, \u2018Oh, I was in the military and I did all this really cool stuff. Where do I sign?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transitioning from one life to another\u2014often within the same country, but in an entirely different context\u2014is one of the most significant hurdles a veteran can face. About 250,000 U.S. military service members enter civilian life every year, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Many, if not most, are seeking jobs that leverage the skills of their military life to give them the best situation\u2014and the best salary\u2014they can find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But how do you assess your own worth when you have little or no context after years of jobs that fell into a highly structured system of pay, promotion and mobility\u2014things that might have little in common with civilian life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBluntly put,\u201d said Klobucher, \u201cpeople in the military don\u2019t have any experience negotiating or calculating their own value because they\u2019ve always been told what it is by the military.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How can veterans determine what their salary requirements should be? Here are some tips to keep in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, understand that salaries can be negotiable. Unlike most of the military, many companies have salary ranges that aren\u2019t necessarily set in stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA veteran will benefit from viewing salary negotiation as a transaction,\u201d said Elaine Boylan, a longtime data analyst for Adelphi University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/career-center\/\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Career and Professional Development<\/a> who has worked with transitioning veterans. Learning this early on is imperative for veterans because it then sets the stage for \u201ca reasonable salary throughout their civilian career.\u201d Also: Odds are you won\u2019t be getting a housing allowance, so factor that into your calculations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next: Do research ahead of time. This might seem obvious, but it\u2019s often overlooked. Even such online sites as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.com\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Glassdoor<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/jobs\" target=\"_blank\">LinkedIn Jobs<\/a> can offer context and afford the opportunity to see pay ranges for your skills, said JD Due, executive director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wm.edu\/sites\/veterans\/\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Military Transition<\/a> at William &amp; Mary in Virginia. He recommends that such research be followed by \u201creal conversations\u201d with people you know professionally and personally. That can take transitioning veterans a long way, Due said, in \u201censuring their civilian salaries reflect their military compensation.\u201d Other things to research beforehand: cost of living where you\u2019d be working and possible competition\u2014is your experience indispensable?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond the actual salary numbers, it\u2019s important to map your military skills to civilian life. Do you have experience with leadership, handling difficult personnel situations, working long hours or solving problems in certain ways? Knowing how to discuss such abilities can help you get hired and make more. \u201cI never knew how to talk about my soft skills,\u201d Klobucher said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accompanying this is some communications advice: Translate military lingo for the civilian working world. That may mean curtailing comfortable jargon and understanding that your communication might require some tweaking and softening for this new environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, consider not only the job itself, but who you want to be next. \u201cThe first-order question is, what are some of the different things you\u2019ve experienced \u2014 the activities and tasks you really enjoy?\u201d Due said. \u201cWhen you think about those things that have given you prior success, ask the question, \u2018How can this exist in the future?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It took Klobucher a while to find his path to a master\u2019s degree and a rewarding job in the automotive industry. He applied for more than 50 jobs at first, leading with only his military experience. \u201cNone of them ever got back to me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That changed, and his job and salary possibilities came into better focus, when he understood a couple things\u2014how to translate what he knew into what employers wanted, and how to be informed when throwing himself into the job-hunting fray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow,\u201d Klobucher said, \u201cI know what I can sell myself
