{"id":16624,"date":"2019-12-05T02:52:29","date_gmt":"2019-12-05T02:52:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/12\/05\/us-postal-service-issues-healing-ptsd-stamp-to-raise-funds-for-veterans\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T05:35:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T05:35:53","slug":"us-postal-service-issues-healing-ptsd-stamp-to-raise-funds-for-veterans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2019\/12\/05\/us-postal-service-issues-healing-ptsd-stamp-to-raise-funds-for-veterans\/","title":{"rendered":"US Postal Service issues \u2018Healing PTSD\u2019 stamp to raise funds for veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States Postal Service is taking action to help veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder with the release of a new commemorative stamp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proceeds from the \u201cHealing PTSD\u201d stamp purchases will be donated to the Department of Veterans Affairs and National Center for PTSD, the Postal Service announced Monday during a dedication event in Charlotte, North Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The image on the stamp, created by Mark Laita and Greg Breeding, features a sprouting green plant surrounded by withered leaves, a design meant to elicit feelings of growth, healing, and hope, <a href=\"https:\/\/about.usps.com\/newsroom\/national-releases\/2019\/1202-healing-ptsd-semipostal-fundraising-stamp-on-sale-today-nationwide.htm\" target=\"_blank\">the release said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Postal Service is honored to issue this semipostal stamp as a powerful symbol of the healing process, growth and hope for tens of millions of Americans who experience PTSD,\u201d David C. Williams, vice chairman of the Postal Service\u2019s Board of Governors, said during the dedication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday, with the issuance of this stamp, the nation renews its commitment to raise funds to help treat soldiers, veterans, first responders, health care providers and other individuals dealing with this condition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The psychological wellbeing of troops returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is increasingly a focus of mental health studies centering on post-traumatic stress disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly 3 million service members have deployed in support of American war operations since 2001. Approximately 11 percent to 20 percent of returning personnel suffer from PTSD. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5047000\/#b13-ptj4110623\">Some studies<\/a> suggest that number is as high as 30 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Postal Service is authorized to sell such stamps that champion causes it \u201cconsiders to be in the national public interest and appropriate,\u201d the U.S.P.S. release said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cHealing PTSD\u201d stamp, which can be purchased for 65 cents, is the second stamp issued under this clause.
