Navy bids farewell to its worst uniform ever"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting Oct. 1, sailors who are currently being forged by the sea will at long last no longer blend in with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After 11 perilous years of parading around looking like victims of an airplane toilet explosion, the Navy finally is saying sayonara to the Type I Navy Working Uniform, a heinous half-nylon boondoggle that not only wasted hundreds of millions of dollars but endangered the lives of everyone who donned the accursed \u201cblueberry.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s because until 2012, sailors didn\u2019t realize that a mere spark could turn them into blueberry flamb\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or \u2014 as the Navy Clothing and Textile Research Facility eloquently put it after testing a uniform that doubled as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/2013\/03\/21\/report-fire-can-melt-nwus-to-your-skin\/\" target=_blank>a thermoplastic fiber<\/a>\u201d Yankee candle that \u201cmelts and drips\u201d when lit \u2014 it \u201cwill burn robustly until completely consumed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surveys suggest most sailors, if given the opportunity, will robustly choose to avoid welding clothing to their skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A pile of blueberries and a lone Zippo might\u2019ve solved the Navy\u2019s NWU I problem in 2013 but, instead, the admirals embarked on a three-year process of swapping it out for what looks suspiciously like Marine Corps digital woodland cammies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least sailors falling overboard today will stick out like a deciduous forest inexplicably bobbing from the sea and be saved.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/02\/25\/new-uniforms-revealed-fashionable-and-free\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"172\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Uni-front.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New uniforms revealed!  Fashionable and FREE!<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Another round of wear-testing is slated for July, but if it pans out this two-piece uniform could become optional issued clothing when you report on board ship \u2014 no trips to Navy Exchange, no money out of your annual uniform allowance.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there\u2019s a hero in this sordid sartorial story, it\u2019s probably the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/06\/11\/burke-takes-over-as-vcno-moran-starts-transition-to-cno\/\" target=_blank>vice chief of naval operations, Vice Adm. Robert P. Burke<\/a>, who orchestrated the blue-to-green shift beginning in 2016 when he was the chief of naval personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur sailors want uniforms that are comfortable, they want them to be lightweight and breathable and ultimately, they want fewer of them,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2016\/08\/04\/the-u-s-military-is-dumping-the-dumbest-uniform-ever\/\" target=\"_blank\">Burke told Navy Times in 2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fewer uniforms in a seabag already overflowing with unnecessary items is a welcome concept for any sailor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A cash-strapped seaman apprentice shouldn\u2019t be required to maintain as many uniforms as the Nike-fueled University of Oregon Ducks football team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fleet feedback told Burke that the Type III was favored because it\u2019s &#8220;lighter, it breathes good in hot weather climate, it\u2019s got the right accessories for cold weather climates \u2014 and it just wears better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if it\u2019s green and brown and makes everyone look like a plumper Marine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"571\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/m6201310301310326arjpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38638\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/m6201310301310326arjpg.jpg 800w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/m6201310301310326arjpg.jpg?resize=300,214 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/m6201310301310326arjpg.jpg?resize=768,548 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">100211-N-2013O-003 \rYOKOSUKA, Japan (Feb. 11, 2010) Interior Communications Electrician 1st Class Shawn Sutphin, from Norfolk, examines a Navy Working Uniform eight point cover in the Fleet Exchange at Fleet Activities Yokosuka.
