{"id":17488,"date":"2020-05-28T15:28:15","date_gmt":"2020-05-28T15:28:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/05\/28\/cost-of-living-boost-for-veterans-benefits-next-year-passes-house\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T05:48:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T05:48:10","slug":"cost-of-living-boost-for-veterans-benefits-next-year-passes-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/2020\/05\/28\/cost-of-living-boost-for-veterans-benefits-next-year-passes-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Cost-of-living boost for veterans benefits next year passes House"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">House lawmakers on Thursday easily passed legislation ensuring veterans will see a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/10\/11\/veterans-military-retirees-to-see-a-16-percent-cost-of-living-boost-in-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\">cost-of-living boost<\/a> next year if Social Security officials approve one for their recipients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The legislation linking the two government benefits is largely routine, but faces extra obstacles this year because of disruptions to congressional operations stemming from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/coronavirus\/\" target=_blank>ongoing coronavirus pandemic.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 100,000 Americans have died from the fast-spreading virus in the last three months. In an effort to limit the chance of transmitting the virus, most House and Senate floor votes have been stalled or cancelled in recent weeks, and most committee work shifted to online forums.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/10\/11\/veterans-military-retirees-to-see-a-16-percent-cost-of-living-boost-in-benefits\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-485008004.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Veterans, military retirees to see a 1.6 percent cost-of-living boost in benefits<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The boost is below the 2.8 percent increase beneficiaries saw last year.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the veterans COLA bill \u2014 sponsored by Rep. Elaine Luria, D-Va. \u2014 was approved by a voice vote Thursday morning by the full House, without objection. She is hopeful the Senate can take up the measure quickly as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI haven\u2019t heard of any problems or hold ups with the bill,\u201d she said. \u201cThis wouldn\u2019t go into effect until December, so we\u2019re well ahead of schedule. But I don\u2019t anticipate any problems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans benefits covered include disability compensation, compensation for dependents, clothing allowances, and dependency and indemnity compensation checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The measure is typically just a formality \u2014 it passed Congress last year with no opposition \u2014 but is required annual work for lawmakers because federal statute does not guarantee annual COLA increases for the veterans benefits, as it does for Social Security.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2020\/05\/15\/changes-to-va-benefits-operations-forced-by-coronavirus-could-outlast-the-pandemic\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635850891678119508-ap-772059955918jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Changes to VA benefits operations forced by coronavirus could outlast the pandemic<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Telephone town halls, some employee remote work will likely continue even when the virus restrictions lift.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legislative efforts in recent years to make the increases automatic for veterans have proven unsuccessful. Luria said she has discussed the issue with leadership, but has not found any traction thus far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">House leaders hailed the bill\u2019s passage as a step in keeping the country\u2019s promise to care for veterans well after their military service has finished. Senate leaders have not indicated when the measure could be considered there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year, veterans and Social Security recipients received a 1.6
