{"id":17588,"date":"2018-10-24T21:14:58","date_gmt":"2018-10-24T21:14:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/10\/24\/heavy-seas-damage-navy-ship-near-iceland\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T14:02:04","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T14:02:04","slug":"heavy-seas-damage-navy-ship-near-iceland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/10\/24\/heavy-seas-damage-navy-ship-near-iceland\/","title":{"rendered":"Heavy seas damage Navy ship near Iceland"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The amphibious dock landing ship <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nvr.navy.mil\/SHIPDETAILS\/SHIPSDETAIL_LSD_44_2437.HTML\" target=_blank>Gunston Hall<\/a> suffered damage Monday during heavy seas off Iceland, causing minor injuries to some sailors and casting into doubt whether the vessel will participate in upcoming NATO maneuvers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. 6th Fleet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.c6f.navy.mil\/news\/uss-gunston-hall-and-uss-new-york-return-iceland\" target=_blank>reported<\/a> that the Gunston Hall\u2019s well deck and several landing craft boats were damaged on Monday evening, but the injured sailors were treated and returned to duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 29-year-old Whidbey Island-class warship returned to port in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, for a damage assessment, according to 6th Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Kyle Raines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe sea state was challenging, but not out of the ship\u2019s limits,\u201d 6th Fleet spokesman, Raines said in an email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said there is no timeline for when the assessment will be completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another ship slated to participate in NATO\u2019s Trident Juncture exercise \u2014 the amphibious transport dock ship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surflant\/lpd21\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=_blank>New York<\/a> \u2014 also entered the Icelandic port \u201cas a safe haven from the seas until further notice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe USS New York will remain in port until it is safe to get underway,\u201d Raines said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It remains unclear what impact, if any, the sidelining of the Gunston Hall and New York have on Trident Juncture, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/10\/19\/the-navy-sends-a-carrier-back-to-russias-arctic-haunts\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/truman-jet.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The Navy sends a carrier back to Russia\u2019s Arctic haunts<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The aircraft carrier Harry S. Robert Neller had said earlier this month that his troops planned to perform an amphibious landing on Iceland, if weather permitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Navy carrier strike
