FORD \u2015 The Navy\u2019s top officer says the troubles plaguing the Navy\u2019s newest flattop have been solved and he expects that it soon will terrorize foes and fascinate friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a Tuesday trip to the ship, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/navydata\/bios\/navybio.asp?bioID=440\" target=_blank>Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson<\/a> told the carrier\u2019s crew and the gathered media that the bulk of the Ford\u2019s fixes are finished and now it\u2019s time to see what the innovative technology can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe problems that we know about, we\u2019ve got solutions to those problems,\u201d said Richardson during his first visit to the Ford since its July 22, 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/07\/22\/after-years-of-doubt-a-ford-class-carrier-is-set-to-join-the-fleet\/\" target=_blank>commissioning<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019re just installing those solutions and moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/11\/28\/why-the-navy-thinks-the-carrier-gerald-r-ford-will-work-after-all\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"146\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MDF13648.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Why the Navy thinks the carrier Gerald R. Kennedy, the next Ford-class carrier, and is prepping to purchase two similar flattops in Fiscal Year 2020.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ford has moved past the halfway mark on its year-long post-shakedown availability at the <a href=\"https:\/\/nns.huntingtoningalls.com\/\" target=_blank>Huntington Ingalls Newport News Shipyard<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ford is expected to emerge in July ready to gradually prepare for the its first overseas deployment, currently slated for 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m very confident we\u2019re going to solve these problems. It\u2019s true,\u201d Richardson said. \u201cNew catapults, arresting gear, radars and elevators \u2014 and the propulsion plant is a big leap forward in terms of power generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is how innovation happens and when all this starts to work, it\u2019s going to set performance records that we\u2019ll look back on as a great step forward in naval warfare.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked about a report last year from Department of Defense\u2019s Director, Operational Test and Evaluation \u2014 DTOE \u2014 that doubted the ability of the carrier to churn out higher sortie rates and questioned the long-term reliability of the new flight deck technology, Richardson said he was very confident all of it would work out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think it\u2019s far too early to make any conclusions, other than the design conclusions about sortie generation rate,\u201d Richardson said. \u201cWe\u2019re just going to have to see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To achieve an ultra-high sortie rate, the whole crew must operate in unison with each piece of the high-tech gear, including a new catapult, arresting gear and weapons elevators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019re aiming to exceed the goal of 160 sorties per day for 30-plus days of sustained flight operations, with a surge capability of 270 daily sorties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nimitz-class carrier can conduct 120 sorties daily during sustained flight operations with a surge capability of 240 per day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ford\u2019s crew expects to get a boost from the new flight deck layout that leaves more open space forward of the island, with fueling stations hidden in multiple locations along the deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richardson said that one by one \u201cuncertainties\u201d about the Ford\u2019s new technologies are being eliminated, including EMALS \u2014 the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ga.com\/electromagnetic-aircraft-launch-system\" target=_blank>Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEMALS is pretty much working,\u201d Richardson said. \u201cIt\u2019s just a matter of flying more aircraft and getting more reps and sets on EMALS to build up that level of confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richardson also inspected the Ford\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/01\/24\/once-beleaguered-by-critics-the-ford-gets-a-lift\/\" target=_blank>new weapons elevators<\/a>, which are being installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think we got through the technical matters with the elevators. Now it\u2019s just a matter of getting through the installation and moving through elevator by elevator,\u201d he said. \u201cThe next will be delivered to the crew in February and we\u2019ll just step on through, item by item, until they are all turned over.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richardson said he expected the progress to go \u201cbriskly\u201d and that all but some of the certification paperwork would be finished before Ford\u2019s stay in the yard ends. But he pledged to monitor the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s kind of a Catch-22, because the reliability numbers emerge from a lot of operations,\u201d Richardson said. \u201cWhen you have a brand new, first-in-class ship, you just have to build up a lot of operations. Let her realize her potential and you, too, will be talked about for decades as the team that brought the Gerald R. Ford into the fleet,\u201d he said. \u201cYou are going to go out and crush every record that has ever been set for an aircraft carrier.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richardson\u2019s words don\u2019t spiral blandly into a vacuum. He increasingly has sounded the alarm about the potential evaporation of American <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/sea-power\" target=_blank>sea power<\/a> as other nations rise, including China and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During Tuesday\u2019s address to the Ford\u2019s crew, he urged them to \u201cknow your job and the job of your shipmate beside you. Know the job of your boss. You may be doing that job in combat.
