{"id":17796,"date":"2016-05-03T17:52:14","date_gmt":"2016-05-03T17:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/05\/03\/4000-sailors-marines-return-home-from-isis-fight\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:04:27","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:04:27","slug":"4000-sailors-marines-return-home-from-isis-fight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2016\/05\/03\/4000-sailors-marines-return-home-from-isis-fight\/","title":{"rendered":"4,000 sailors, Marines return home from ISIS fight"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NORFOLK, Va.\u00a0\u2013\u00a0More than 4,000 sailors and Marines returned home Tuesday as the\u00a0Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group wrapped up its\u00a0seven-month deployment to the Middle East, having helped set up a key base in the intensifying war on ISIS<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">to the Middle East<\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"line-height:1.6\">&#8220;I think our sailors and Marines know they had a great role in contributing to coalition forces doing what needs to be done in Iraq,&#8221; said Capt. Larry Getz, who assumed command of Kearsarge in November<\/span><span class=\"rte rte-comment\" style=\"line-height:1.6\"> as part of a fleet-up<\/span><span style=\"line-height:1.6\">. &#8220;We hope and pray for those that are in the fight right now, that we can get this job done as quickly as possible and bring everybody back home.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0ARG is comprised of\u00a0amphibious assault ship Kearsarge and amphibious transport dock Arlington, both based here, and the dock landing ship Oak Hill out of Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, offloaded its Marines Saturday, with the exception of those who remained at <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">the\u00a0<\/span>a firebase in Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though tasked to provide maritime and theater security as well as crisis response in the 5th and 6th Fleets, the blue-green team was most noted for its contributions to\u00a0Operation Inherent Resolve,\u00a0the fight in Iraq against\u00a0the Islamic State group, more commonly known as ISIS or ISIL.\u00a0Key to that effort was the March establishment of\u00a0Kara Soar Counter Fire Complex\u00a0near Makhmour in northern Iraq, and\u00a0roughly\u00a015 miles from enemy territory.\u00a0Fewer than 200 Marines set up the outpost, which has at least four\u00a0M777A2 howitzer artillery guns.\u00a0It marked the first time since U.S. forces returned to\u00a0Iraq\u00a0in 2014 that Americans have set up a quasi-permanent presence on the ground outside the\u00a0perimeter of a\u00a0major Iraqi military installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"line-height:1.6\">Staff Sgt. Louis Cardin was killed, and eight Marines injured, when ISIS fighters<\/span><span class=\"rte rte-comment\" style=\"line-height:1.6\">Islamic State group militants<\/span><span style=\"line-height:1.6\"> launched a rocket attack on the coalition base\u00a0on March 19. The\u00a027-year-old\u00a0field artilleryman was assigned to the 26th MEU&#8217;s Battalion Landing Team,\u00a02nd Battalion, 6th Marines.\u00a0The Marines fended off at least one other attack just two\u00a0days after Cardin&#8217;s death when a squad-sized team of ISIS fighters infiltrated the area.\u00a0Two enemy fighters were\u00a0killed in that operation and\u00a0&#8220;the rest ran away in fear,&#8221; Army Col. Steve Warren, a Defense Department spokesman<\/span><span class=\"rte rte-comment\" style=\"line-height:1.6\"> in Baghdad<\/span><span style=\"line-height:1.6\">, said after the event.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuesday&#8217;s homecoming was a bit bittersweet because the artillery Marines remained at the firebase \u2014 considered a\u00a0key staging area for the Iraqi army as it battles to retake Mosul from ISIS \u2014\u00a0until could Army artillery could provide relief. \u00a0When that will happen has not been announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We trained together, and we are a big family \u2014 that is the relationship that we built,&#8221; said\u00a0Capt. A. P. Bennett, the ARG commodore. &#8220;It certainly is difficult to leave sailors or Marines behind, but that&#8217;s what was needed by Central Command.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was the first deployment for the\u00a0Arlington, which was commissioned in April 2013. The eighth ship in the San Antonio class, Arlington is named in honor of the 184 victims who died when\u00a0American Airlines Flight 77\u00a0crashed into the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, as well as the first responders from Arlington County.
