Cmdr. Courtney Hillson said that the Gonzalez\u2019s crew got two extra days at home while workers fixed \u201ca piece of equipment associated with anti-submarine warfare.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials won\u2019t say where the warship will go next or estimate how long it will stay at sea but insist the Gonzalez\u2019s primary duty initially will be missile defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are an independent deployer. Our primary mission is ballistic missile defense, but we have mission sets in all other areas and we are part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surflant\/ccsg12\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=_blank>Strike Group 12 <\/a>as well,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surflant\/ddg66\/Pages\/Bio1.aspx\" target=_blank>Cmdr. Christopher J. Schwarz<\/a>, the Gonzalez\u2019s commanding officer, told reporters on Wednesday when the destroyer was supposed to deploy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s the destroyer\u2019s first lengthy deployment since returning here with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/submit\/display.asp?story_id=95665\" target=_blank>Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group<\/a> in 2016 after an extended tour across waters overseen by the 5th and 6th Fleets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, the Gonzalez has undergone two long sessions in the shipyard before training with the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, including their Composite Training Unit Exercise that straddled January and February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schwarz said that this will be the first deployment for about 60 percent of his crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m excited for our team, our crew, as we\u2019ve worked really hard to prepare for this and we\u2019re ready to go, to answer our nation\u2019s call,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/02\/27\/why-the-lincoln-and-her-strike-group-are-waiting-for-their-exercise-grades\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/JMB1790.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This strike group is still waiting for its COMPTUEX grades<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The carrier strike group is prepping to deploy overseas.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before shoving off, Fire Controlman 2nd Class Jared Ahenkora-Kwakyi conceded he was \u201canxious\u201d about going on his first deployment but said it felt \u201csatisfying\u201d to finally end the training and start the tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m really looking forward to doing my job in a non-simulated environment,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is the real deal and we\u2019re prepared. And once we\u2019re out there, you never know what might happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the Gonzalez trained with the Abraham Lincoln CSG and participated in the same COMPTUEX, the destroyer\u2019s deployment are officially separate cruises. But Schwarz said that his crew could \u201cabsolutely\u201d fold back into escort duties with the group, if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CSG hasn\u2019t departed yet but when the Lincoln leaves it will be for good.
