{"id":17926,"date":"2020-05-26T21:53:57","date_gmt":"2020-05-26T21:53:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/05\/26\/watch-this-ship-mounted-navy-laser-shoot-down-a-drone\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:53:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:53:02","slug":"watch-this-ship-mounted-navy-laser-shoot-down-a-drone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/05\/26\/watch-this-ship-mounted-navy-laser-shoot-down-a-drone\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch this ship-mounted Navy laser shoot down a drone"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<style>.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }<\/style><div class='embed-container'><iframe src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/\/2T_wlXJTkd8' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The future of naval warfare arrived earlier this month when a U.S. Navy laser stationed aboard a ship shot down an aerial drone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The amphibious transport dock <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpf.navy.mil\/news.aspx\/130628\" target=_blank>Portland<\/a> blasted the vehicle with a \u201cSolid State Laser\u201d prototype on May 16, the first at-sea test of the system, the Navy said in a Friday press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy has been developing lasers and other directed-energy weapons since the 1960s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such weapons \u201care defined as electromagnetic systems capable of converting chemical or electrical energy to radiated energy and focusing it on a target, resulting in physical damage that degrades, neutralizes, defeats, or destroys an adversarial capability,\u201d the release states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or in laymen\u2019s terms: PEW PEW!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith this new advanced capability, we are redefining war at sea for the Navy,\u201d the Portland\u2019s commanding officer, Capt. Karrey Sanders, said in the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main benefit of using laser systems to defend U.S. warships would come in the western Pacific, where an increasingly assertive and capable China can churn out large quantities of missiles designed to overwhelm America\u2019s pinpoint defenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without a laser, U.S. warships might have to empty a magazine of anti-ballistic missiles to counter incoming waves of Chinese weapons, forcing a destroyer to rely on its gun or remove itself from the fight to reload its vertical launching system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defensive lasers would allow ships to save their missile tubes for offense.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/05\/06\/pew-pew-pew-laser-armed-warships-no-longer-science-fiction\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Correa2.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Pew! Pew! Pew! Laser-armed warships no longer science fiction<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Navy has never been closer to fielding directed-energy weapons.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can save your missiles for longer-range issues, where you have to have the (defensive) missile or an offensive capability,\u201d defense consultant and author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usni.org\/people\/eric-wertheim\" target=_blank>Eric Wertheim<\/a> told Navy Times last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brass hopes to get to a point where such lasers can work in concert with optical dazzlers on board ships that would confuse drones, not incinerate them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such capabilities would be a \u201cgame changer\u201d if developed and deployed, according to a 2018 Congressional Research Service report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRarely has the Navy had so many potential new types of surface-ship air-defense weapons simultaneously available for development and potential deployment,\u201d the report states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While steep technological challenges remain, such advancements could be as big as the missile age of the 1950s and 1960s, and \u201cat least as big as nuclear submarines,\u201d Wertheim said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDirected energy has the ability to completely alter the way that navies fight,\u201d Wertheim said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a way, the Navy has no choice but to develop and field this technology as fast as possible because potential enemies overseas will do the same thing, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not a problem that\u2019s going away,\u201d Wertheim said. \u201cThe expense of developing our naval assets
