{"id":17947,"date":"2015-08-04T19:47:30","date_gmt":"2015-08-04T19:47:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/08\/04\/shore-navy-bases-getting-led-light-bulbs\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:58:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:58:10","slug":"shore-navy-bases-getting-led-light-bulbs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2015\/08\/04\/shore-navy-bases-getting-led-light-bulbs\/","title":{"rendered":"Shore Navy bases getting LED light bulbs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Navy is looking to pocket<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">save<\/span> a few million bucks this year with upgraded lighting that saves electricity\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">to the fluorescent light bulbs <\/span>at shore bases <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">installations <\/span>worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Navy Installations Command is working to replace fluorescent light\u00a0bulbs in <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">administrative <\/span>offices, gyms, street lights and parking garages at its 70 facilities\u00a0with LEDs, which are brighter, safer and cost less<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> than fluorescents<\/span>, according to a July 31 CNIC release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Navy ships have been using mercury-free LED light bulbs, making replacement of bulbs easier to handle and dispose of,&#8221; said Lt. Cmdr. Gareth Montgomery, action officer for Navy Installations Command <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">(NIC) <\/span>energy branch, in the release. &#8220;There are significant safety and efficiency advantages, since fluorescent bulbs are regularly replaced.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the fleet, the release said, ships that have switched to LEDs save 3 percent\u00a0\u2014 or $150 million\u00a0\u2014 of their annual energy costs. New tubular LEDs last up to 50,000 hours, exponentially longer than the 7,500 hours <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">you get with <\/span>fluorescents offer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ashore, the new bulbs have several benefits. Their brightness can decrease eye strain, according to the National Eye Institute, and their mercury-free construction makes them safer and more durable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reducing the Navy&#8217;s energy use<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">consumption<\/span> has been a key goal for Navy Secretary Ray Mabus since he began his tenure in 2009. His Great Green Fleet initiative has run into bumps along the way, but light bulbs have seen success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy first installed LEDs on ships in 2007, and through consistent funding, outfitted more than 125 ships and submarines\u00a0\u2014\u00a0almost half of the fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was slow going for a while, the release said, because earlier versions of the LED required costly new light fixtures. But there&#8217;s one hitch: BRITE is a compact fluorescent bulb, so he&#8217;s about to be obsolete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;BRITE upgrade is being discussed,
