{"id":18022,"date":"2018-08-14T17:09:15","date_gmt":"2018-08-14T17:09:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/08\/14\/initiating-the-cpos-guidance-everyone-needs-to-know\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:56:36","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:56:36","slug":"initiating-the-cpos-guidance-everyone-needs-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/08\/14\/initiating-the-cpos-guidance-everyone-needs-to-know\/","title":{"rendered":"Initiating the CPOs: Guidance everyone needs to know"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commands are prepping for initiation, the rites of passage that will help usher the 4,704 active-duty, 448 selected reserve and 262 reserve full-time support first class petty officers into the chiefs mess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It all culminates on pinning day \u2014 Sept. 14 \u2014 across the Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the wake of the Navy\u2019s Aug. 7 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/08\/08\/tis-the-season-navy-announces-fy19-cpo-selections\/\" target=_blank>formal announcement <\/a>naming the those selected to enter the Goat Locker, the four fleet master chiefs have jointly issued official guidance on how the initiation process should play out. The document seeks to head off any shenanigans that have plagued initiations throughout the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDuring this time, we are charged with what is perhaps your most important strategic responsibility-preparing our reliefs to enter the Mess, to begin their career anew with the appropriate focus of a chief petty officer, \u201d the four jointly wrote the guidance. \u201c [Command master chiefs and command senior enlisted leaders] must manage to ensure that every event is conducted in such a way that safety, dignity and respect never falter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time, the Navy will ban selectees from participating in fundraising events for the mess during initiation season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFund raising is not something we\u2019re going to engage in with selectees at this time,\u201d said Fleet Master Chief (SW\/IW\/AW) Russ Smith, the interim master chief petty officer of the Navy during a July 26 CPO call on Norfolk Naval Station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you\u2019re going to tell me that the way we do chiefs initiation today is going to fail because we\u2019re not fund raising, then we\u2019re doing something wrong.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/05\/31\/initiation-is-back-mcpon-ends-officialdom-s-14-year-ban-on-using-the-term-for-chiefs-training\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mcpon-giordano.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">&#8216;Initiation&#8217; is back: MCPON ends officialdom&#8217;s 14-year ban on using the term for chiefs&#8217; training<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Navy chief selects can once again be &quot;initiated&quot; into the mess.\u00a0The Navy\u2019s top enlisted sailor has made it OK to refer to the process of making new chief petty officers as an &quot;initiation,&quot; ending 14 years of official taboo for the term once closely associated with hazing and sophomoric pranks.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiation process is steeped in tradition that\u2019s developed over the 125 years that chief petty officers have been a part of the Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years, however, those who served in the post of master chief petty officer of the Navy have toiled to professionalize the transition period. The goal has been to offer events that test the mental and physical toughness of the selectees but reinforce important leadership concepts like team work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are a Navy of teams, and the obsession for building winning teams must be cultivated during Initiation,\u201d the guidance says. \u201cThe relationship between members of the mess \u2014 the responsibilities we have to one another \u2014 are at the core of our culture and should be the predominant focus in the events conducted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are still individual educational requirements the chief selects must complete, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/usnwc.edu\/naval-leadership-and-ethics-center\/Non-Resident-Leadership-Courses\" target=_blank>CPO Selectee Leadership Course<\/a>, which is a three-day course taught at the command level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year there\u2019s a new course being taught. It\u2019s part of the \u201cLaying the Keel,\u201d leadership initiative introduced earlier this year and teaches the meaning of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navy.mil\/mcpon\/docs\/Teaching%20to%20the%20Creed.pdf\" target=_blank>Chief Petty Officer Creed<\/a>, considered the cornerstone document of the Navy\u2019s CPO mess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It comes together in a \u201ccapstone event\u201d on the evening before pinning. It\u2019s supposed to provide a practical application of what the selectees have learned during the initiation process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCommands are expected to tailor their program around operational commitments, but all-night evolutions present serious safety concerns and should not be undertaken,\u201d the guidance reads. \u201cSleep must be a deliberate part of the plan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It concludes with the formal acceptance of the new chief petty officers into the mess.
