{"id":18136,"date":"2021-01-26T18:29:51","date_gmt":"2021-01-26T18:29:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/01\/26\/theodore-roosevelt-steams-into-the-south-china-sea\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:57:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:57:24","slug":"theodore-roosevelt-steams-into-the-south-china-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/2021\/01\/26\/theodore-roosevelt-steams-into-the-south-china-sea\/","title":{"rendered":"Theodore Roosevelt steams into the South China Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt and its strike group entered the South China Sea Saturday, a month into their second deployment in a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/Press-Office\/News-Stories\/Article\/2480963\/theodore-roosevelt-carrier-strike-group-enters-south-china-sea\/\" target=_blank>Navy release<\/a> announcing TR\u2019s move states the carrier is conducting routine operations, very little has been routine in the disputed waters for several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beijing and its regional neighbors all have competing claims to various swaths of the busy waterway, and the U.S. Navy regularly sails into the sea to push back on Beijing\u2019s expanding territorial claims and island building, and to reinforce the fact that such waters are international.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strike group is conducting flight ops, maritime strike exercises and other coordinated training in the sea, an economically vital stretch of water through which two-thirds of global trade travels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe all benefit from free and open access to the seas and our operations represent our commitment to maintaining regional security and stability,\u201d TR\u2019s commanding officer, Capt. Eric Anduze, said in the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TR is joined on this deployment by Carrier Air Wing 11, the guided-missile cruiser Bunker Hill and the guided-missile
