{"id":18230,"date":"2021-04-14T19:50:58","date_gmt":"2021-04-14T19:50:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/04\/14\/newly-deployed-sailors-are-now-getting-counseling-assistance-aboard-ship\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:00:27","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:00:27","slug":"newly-deployed-sailors-are-now-getting-counseling-assistance-aboard-ship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/04\/14\/newly-deployed-sailors-are-now-getting-counseling-assistance-aboard-ship\/","title":{"rendered":"Newly deployed sailors are now getting counseling assistance aboard ship"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy has started providing sailors mental health support in the early stages of deployments so they are better equipped to manage common stressors they may encounter while getting underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the Navy\u2019s new Departure &amp; Separation Program, sailors on six surface ships were provided access to licensed counselors and specially trained educators during their first two to six weeks of deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and it\u2019s no different with mental health,\u201d said Kim Speed, a Counseling Advocacy Program supervisor who worked with sailors aboard the guided-missile cruiser Monterey during the ship\u2019s restriction of movement (ROM) period, in a Navy news release. The Monterey departed Norfolk in February with the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program launched ahead of schedule in December when leadership aboard the six ships \u2014 the cruisers Monterey and Vella Gulf and the guided-missile destroyers Mitscher, Mahan, Jason Dunham and Laboon \u2014 sent an urgent request to Navy Installations Command\u2019s Fleet and Family Support Program about providing emotional support for their sailors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some crew members were coping with a series of challenges and exhibiting heightened stress levels stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, loss of shipmates, the pressures of pre-deployment work-ups, operational tempo and restriction of movement (ROM) periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/02\/08\/commanding-officers-to-get-more-involved-in-sail-program\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2167460.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Commanding officers to get more involved in SAIL program<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Sailor Assistance and Intercept for Life procedures will be modified to require commanding officers to verify that sailors who have voiced suicidal thoughts or exhibited suicidal behavior contact s SAIL case manager.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, the Navy sent trained experts to those ships where they could provide sailors with non-medical counseling, group workshops, walk-around engagements, one-on-one consultations and psychoeducation. Charles C. That showed her that he and the ship\u2019s leadership took mental health seriously, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe knew who needed my help, what was going on with them and worked to make sure they got the help they needed, one way or another,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program officially launched in December 2020 \u2014 a month ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToo many people, especially active duty service members, resist counseling or avoid it until things in their life really take a downward turn,\u201d Speed said. \u201cIf someone is struggling, it\u2019s best to get them help early on rather than wait until they start exhibiting problematic behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIssues can start small, like being worried about finances, not hearing from a loved one or being concerned about a friend\u2019s health,\u201d Speed said. \u201cThere\u2019s no shame in talking to someone like me about any of it, even if it seems minor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Editor\u2019s note: This story has been updated
