{"id":18526,"date":"2020-03-16T01:09:43","date_gmt":"2020-03-16T01:09:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/03\/16\/first-coronavirus-case-for-sailor-on-board-warship\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:59:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:59:09","slug":"first-coronavirus-case-for-sailor-on-board-warship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/03\/16\/first-coronavirus-case-for-sailor-on-board-warship\/","title":{"rendered":"First coronavirus case for sailor on board a warship"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sailor assigned to the amphibious assault ship Boxer tested \u201cpresumptive positive\u201d for the new strain of coronavirus, marking the first case for a sailor on board a Navy ship and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/03\/14\/coronavirus-reaches-naval-base-san-diego\/\" target=_blank>the second known patient<\/a> from Naval Base San Diego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tests conducted by the Navy or private, county or state clinics are considered \u201cpresumptive positive\u201d until the results are confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sailor was treated by Naval Medical Center San Diego personnel and is quarantined at home. Personnel believed to have been in close contact with the sailor also have been ordered into self-isolation at their residences or quarters for 14 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of them is living on the warship, which is homeported at Naval Base San Diego. Boxer is not at sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group is believed to be less than 10 sailors now, but military health workers continue to investigate whether any additional people have been exposed to COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the results of that investigation, additional measures might be taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a prepared statement issued by the Pentagon, officials said that the Boxer\u2019s crew continues to take \u201cappropriate preventative measures\u201d and is \u201cconducting a thorough cleaning,\u201d following guidance from the CDC and the Virginia-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.navy.mil\/sites\/nmcphc\/program-and-policy-support\/Pages\/Novel-Coronavirus.aspx\">Navy-Marine Corps Public Health Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/03\/14\/amid-coronavirus-pandemic-navys-top-leaders-address-the-fleet\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"154\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/CNO-SNIP-MAIN.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Amid coronavirus pandemic, Navy\u2019s top leaders address the fleet<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The brief address \u2014 74 seconds \u2014 addressed sweeping changes in how personnel and their families will travel and work over the next 60 days,<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Navy Region Southwest announced Saturday that another sailor tested \u201cpresumptive positive\u201d for the coronavirus, he is assigned to a tenant command that is not a warship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials do not believe there is a connection between the two cases, but the investigation continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vice Adm. Richard Brown \u2014 the Naval Surface Force commander for the U.S. Pacific Fleet \u2014 has vowed to take every measure possible to protect the force. Officials are closely coordinating with county, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdph.ca.gov\/Programs\/CID\/DCDC\/Pages\/Immunization\/ncov2019.aspx\" target=_blank>state<\/a> and federal health authorities to protect personnel, their families and the local population, according to the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boxer\u2019s crew assembled last month in the hangar bay to celebrate the vessel\u2019s 25 birthday, but the sailor is believed to have contracted the disease several weeks after the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The San Diego County Public Health Office reported on Friday that 158 people were being monitored for potential exposure to COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i><b>This is a breaking story and Navy
