Jeffrey S. Tamulevich<\/a> was removed from his post on May 21, 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the months before his relief, Tamulevich hosted a series of sexual liaisons with a second class petty officer, showing her favoritism that troubled other leaders on board the Hawaii-based ship, the probe determined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her name is redacted in the copy of the internal investigation provided to Navy Times in response to a Freedom of Information Act request, but it indicates she spent many nights in the captain\u2019s quarters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tamulevich would peek into the P-way each morning to make sure the coast was clear before she headed to her 6 a.m. watch shift, according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/05\/24\/navy-fires-co-of-destroyer-hopper-the-fourth-reported-command-firing-in-may\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Tamulevich.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Navy fires CO of destroyer Hopper, the fourth reported command firing in May<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Cmdr. Jeffrey Tamulevich was fired this week over &quot;evidence of misconduct involving alleged fraternization,&quot; Navy officials said .<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigating officer \u2014 whose name also was removed in the report \u2014 recommended Tamulevich, a married father, go to admiral\u2019s mast for his conduct, plus \u201cappropriate administrative action, including detachment for cause and a recommendation that he be required to show cause for retention.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It remains unclear what discipline Tamulevich faced for his affair with the unmarried shipmate, beyond his removal from command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tamulevich declined comment through Lt. Cmdr. Megan Jackler, a military attorney who once represented him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jeffrey-tamulevich\/\" target=_blank>LinkedIn profile<\/a> states he\u2019s been the deputy director of training for the Aegis Readiness and Training Center in Dahlgren, Virginia, since late 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the time of his firing to November of that year, Tamulevich served at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surfor\/cnsgmp\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=_blank>Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific<\/a> in Hawaii but he\u2019s now \u201ctransitioning to the private sector,\u201d his LinkedIn page states.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/09\/24\/command-master-chief-fired-for-sliding-into-facebook-messages-of-another-chiefs-wife\/#targetText=PCU%20Thomas%20Hudner%20is%20shown,investigation%20obtained%20by%20Navy%20Times.\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">Command master chief fired for sliding into Facebook messages of another chief\u2019s wife<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before they struck up a romance, the petty officer had a request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In late 2017, she asked Tamulevich to reverse a disciplinary action taken by the previous Hopper CO, according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Honolulu Police Department nabbed her for drunk driving in 2016, when Tamulevich was serving as the warship\u2019s executive officer, the investigator wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She\u2019d received non-judicial punishment for the incident, but she presented Tamulevich with a civilian expungement order removing her DUI arrest in Honolulu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although \u201cthe notice contained no explanation for why the case had been dismissed or the record expunged,\u201d Tamulevich reversed her NJP on New Year\u2019s Eve in 2017, the investigator wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He then began helping her with an application to become a commissioned officer. (Navy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Emails gleaned from their Navy accounts show Tamulevich would ask her about \u201cexecuting the plan,\u201d his secret code for her visiting his room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CO would leave his door unlocked so she could slip in after her watch shift ended at 9 p.m., according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m taking a quick shower, then probably heading up to the bridge for a bit,\u201d Tamulevich emailed her on May 7, 2018, two weeks before he was fired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are more than welcome to execute the plan\u2026and I hope you do. (Navy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the investigator determined Hopper\u2019s XO and the warship\u2019s command master chief never became &#8220;aware of the romantic relationship or nightly encounters,\u201d they had discussed the appearance of Tamulevich favoring the petty officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, Tamulevich let her \u201cdrive\u201d the ship, a duty usually reserved for junior officers or senior enlisted sailors, according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two days after they returned to Hawaii, he emailed the woman photos of her \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/submit\/display.asp?story_id=25781\" target=_blank>conning<\/a>\u201d Hopper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The affair was exposed in the spring of 2018, while the warship was underway in the Pacific Ocean, the investigator concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The petty officer had been logged on to a shipboard computer. Another sailor started using it and \u201cunduly familiar\u201d emails from Tamulevich began popping up on the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shipmate took snapshots of the messages and alerted a mentor on board the vessel, who reported it up the chain of command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, Tamulevich and the petty officer seemed oblivious to his looming downfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On May 13, 2018, he emailed her about a final rendezvous in his cabin before the ship returned to Hawaii the following day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAre you planning on stopping by this evening to hang out for a bit?\u201d he asked. \u201cI am assuming and hoping yes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOf course I was always planning to come by it is our last night underway ever together!\u201d she replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hopper returned to Hawaii on May 14, 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tamulevich was fired a week later.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/10\/05\/report-co-forced-minions-to-write-his-fitrep-gave-secretary-panic-attack\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Cordero.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Report: CO forced minions to write his FITREP, gave secretary \u2018panic attack\u2019<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Cmdr. Jesus &quot;Manny&quot; Cordero was fired last year.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a transcript of the investigator\u2019s interview with the CO, Tamulevich called the woman a \u201cphenomenal sailor\u201d and \u201ctrusted agent\u201d who would bring him rumors about morale and other deck plate issues swirling through the crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigator pressed Tamulevich on why he reversed the DUI punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJust because (Honolulu Police Department) wrote that letter doesn\u2019t mean she wasn\u2019t driving under the influence,\u201d the investigator noted. \u201cDid she admit to being drunk?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe admitted to sorrow and sadness but I don\u2019t remember exactly what she admitted,\u201d Tamulevich said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigator then grilled him on the details of their affair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIs it normal to email a PO2?\u201d the investigator asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot typically,\u201d Tamulevich admitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow many emails do you think you sent her?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToo many.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tamulevich repeatedly declined to answer certain questions about those messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo what does \u2018having you on Tuesday and on Wednesday morning\u2019 mean?\u201d the investigator continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am not going to answer that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c(Starts reading email) \u2018I saw you in your tight workout pants and a tank top\u2026\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStop,\u201d Tamulevich answered. \u201cI know what I wrote.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later in the interview, Tamulevich admitted hosting the petty officer in his cabin and having sex with her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tamulevich said they both \u201ckind of agreed to stop\u201d the affair a few days earlier, before the ship tied back up in Hawaii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe made the decision but I knew it was coming,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid you feel this close to anyone else?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot this close.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo she came by your cabin every night?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTowards the end, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDiscussions were mostly intimate?\u201d the investigator asked. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t just an hour of sex?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe ate a snack and occasionally had sex.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAny reason you fell for her?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSmart, attractive, easy to talk to,\u201d Tamulevich said. \u201cIt accidentally happened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"4256\" height=\"2832\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hopper.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40940\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hopper.jpg.jpg 4256w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hopper.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hopper.jpg.jpg?resize=768,511 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hopper.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,681 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hopper.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1022 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hopper.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1363 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 4256px) 100vw, 4256px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The guided-missile destroyer Hopper in 2017. (Navy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When contacted by the investigator, the female petty officer initially denied any sexual involvement with Tamulevich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy did he have such a strong interest in you?\u201d the investigator asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think after setting aside the NJP and then working together for the commissioning package, he saw that I would make a strong officer,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a second interview, after the investigator told her that Tamulevich \u201cjust admitted to everything,\u201d the petty officer came clean, saying she\u2019d ended the affair because of guilt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe has a family and I didn\u2019t want to be the cause of the divorce,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigator asked her if she felt relieved it had ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know I made a mistake, but I still did it, consciously, and there was never any alcohol involved so I feel like an idiot,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo you think he understands that he was in love with you?\u201d the investigator asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think he was but I think he knew I wasn\u2019t in love with him,\u201d she replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shipmates were never suspicious because \u201cno one else stood watch in my berthing so no one really noticed or cared where I was,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In between the sex, movies, Cheez-Its, pizza and cuddling in Tamulevich\u2019s cabin, they would occasionally turn to their future, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe talked about when he got out of the Navy that he wanted to open up a bar and then he wanted me to help him run the bar and work there,\u201d the petty officer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut that was about it. At the time of her retirement, at 79 years of age, she was the oldest commissioned officer in Navy.  She now rests in Arlington National Cemetery.
