Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan, for continued repairs and assessments into damage from its collision with a container ship off the Japanese coast last month, U.S. Navy officials said.<br\/><br\/>Seven Fitzgerald sailors died in the June 17 collision, one of the worst at-sea disasters for the Navy in decades.<br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The destroyer&#8217;s collision with the hulking ACX Crystal left a tractor trailer-size hole in the destroyer&#8217;s starboard side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no indication a collision alarm sounded, and some sailors were awoken by salt water flooding into their rack as they scrambled to evacuate, <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/articles\/navy-struggles-with-approach-to-fix-crippled-fitzgerald-destroyer-as-investigation-continues\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: null\">sources told Defense News<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assessments will now be conducted to inform the sea service&#8217;s options for long-term repair, according to Navy officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As investigations into the collision continue, questions remain about how the Crystal was ever able to get so close to one of the Navy&#8217;s most advanced ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It\u2019s virtually unprecedented,&#8221; Lawrence Brennan, a retired Navy captain who now teaches admiralty law at Fordham University&#8217;s School of Law, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/06\/20\/investigation-into-fitzgerald-collision-begins\/\">said last month<\/a>. &#8220;For two large ships, both operated by world-class shipping companies, to be in waters where they should expect traffic and not see each other, boggles the
