The person spoke on condition of anonymity because a plea deal hasn\u2019t been announced. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Federal prosecutors called Hasson a self-described white nationalist and domestic terrorist intent on carrying out a mass killing, but they haven\u2019t filed any terrorism-related charges against him since his February arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/02\/21\/prosecutors-coast-guard-officer-plotted-to-murder-innocent-civilians\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hasson-guns.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Prosecutors: Coast Guard officer plotted to \u2018murder innocent civilians\u2019<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Lt. Christopher Paul Hasson stockpiled guns, ammunition and steroids and dreamed of mass murder, prosecutors contend.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two of the four counts in Hasson\u2019s indictment charge him with illegally possessing unregistered and unserialized silencers. He also was charged with possession of a firearm by an unlawful user or addict of a controlled substance, and illegal possession of tramadol, an opioid painkiller. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prosecutors claimed Hasson drew up what appeared to be a computer spreadsheet hit list that included House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and Democratic presidential hopefuls Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker and Kamala Harris. Several network TV journalists \u2014 MSNBC\u2019s Chris Hayes and Joe Scarborough and CNN\u2019s Chris Cuomo and Van Jones \u2014 also were mentioned. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasson also targeted two Supreme Court justices and two social media company executives and searched online for their home addresses in March 2018, within minutes of searching firearm sales websites, according to prosecutors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigators found 15 guns, including seven rifles, and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition at Hasson\u2019s basement apartment in Silver Spring, Maryland. He researched how to make homemade bombs and mortars, studied sniper training and used his government computer to search for information about Nazis and Adolf Hitler, prosecutors said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/09\/20\/judge-refuses-to-toss-coast-guard-officers-gun-charges\/\" target=_blank>a federal judge refused to dismiss the gun charges against Hasson<\/a>. U.S. District Judge George Hazel rejected defense attorneys\u2019 argument that charging Hasson with unlawful possession of firearm silencers violates his Second Amendment right to bear arms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a hearing earlier this year, Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Windom said the government had no doubt that Hasson\u2019s arrest prevented bloodshed. Prosecutors have said Hasson appeared to be planning attacks inspired by the manifesto of Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian right-wing extremist who killed 77 people in a 2011 bomb-and-shooting rampage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasson has espoused extremist views for years and \u201cintends to murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country,\u201d Windom wrote. Hasson also drafted an email in which he said he was \u201cdreaming of a way to kill almost every last person on earth,\u201d Windom said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assistant federal public defender Liz Oyer has said prosecutors haven\u2019t filed terrorism-related charges against Hasson because they haven\u2019t found any evidence to back up those allegations. She accused prosecutors of seeking to punish Hasson for \u201cprivate thoughts\u201d that he never shared. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasson, a former Marine, worked at Coast Guard headquarters in Washington on a program to acquire advanced new cutters for the agency.
