Man admits he lied to Fox News about Navy SEAL service"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=1cde9bd1-d78f-41d2-91c7-49a6b4ece669\" poster=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/video-poster-1cde9bd1-d78f-41d2-91c7-49a6b4ece669.jpg\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy veteran John Garofalo appeared on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/FoxNews\/videos\/10156109501021336\/\">a Fox News segment<\/a> this month, showing off a massive presidential seal he carved for President Trump while receiving praise for his service in Vietnam as a SEAL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The piece was broadcast nationally and featured cascading shots of all Garofalo\u2019s medals. Online, it went viral, racking up 1.5 million Facebook views on Fox\u2019s Facebook page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Vietnam War veteran served seven years as a member of the nation\u2019s first Navy SEAL team,\u201d Fox News reporter Bryan Llenas said. \u201cHe was awarded 22 commendations, including two Purple Hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Llenas later called the 72-year-old New York State resident a \u201ctough, tough man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was listed twice during his service in Vietnam as missing in action,\u201d Llenas noted at the segment\u2019s close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGod bless John Garofalo,\u201d an anchor said. \u201cWe certainly hope maybe the president is listening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when Navy Times contacted Garofalo Thursday, Garofalo admitted he had lied and never served in Vietnam, never received a Purple Heart and was never a SEAL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Garofalo said he had falsely portrayed himself as a Vietnam vet and a SEAL for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt got bigger and bigger,\u201d Garofalo told Navy Times in a telephone interview. \u201cWhat I did I\u2018m ashamed of, and I didn\u2019t mean to cause so much disgrace to the SEALs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Records show Garofalo did serve in the Navy from Sept. 6, 1963, to Sept. 6, 1967, as an aviation boatswain\u2019s mate \u2015 aircraft handling, or ABH, a job that involves overseeing various ground-based functions involving aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The closest he ever got to Vietnam was a tour in Rota, Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former SEALs who first confirmed Garofalo\u2019s lie, and family members of the man, both said they have contacted Fox about retracting the segment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Fox segment was still up on its Facebook page as of Thursday afternoon. A Fox representative said in an email that it would run an on-air correction Sunday and corrections would be made on its website and Facebook page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFox News not withdrawing that story has drove me nutty,\u201d said Don Shipley, a retired SEAL who outs bogus military service claims and was the first to obtain official records disputing Garofalo\u2019s story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"694\" height=\"581\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/screen-grab-for-print.jpg-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/screen-grab-for-print.jpg-1.png 694w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/screen-grab-for-print.jpg-1.png?resize=300,251 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 694px) 100vw, 694px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shipley said he contacted Navy Times after Fox News failed to retract the bogus piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shipley provided copies of Garofalo\u2019s official military records and Navy Times confirmed the records\u2019 authenticity with the National Personnel Records Center and Naval Special Warfare Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shipley said he approached Fox about retracting the story the day after it ran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Facebook correspondence provided by Shipley shows he messaged Llenas about inconsistencies in Garofalo\u2019s military history and asked Fox to retract the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t know who has the balls in this day and age to do something like that,\u201d he said of Garofalo\u2019s lies in an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Shipley\u2019s correspondence with Fox\u2019s Llenas, the reporter told Shipley he had a request out for Garofalo\u2019s records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can turn this story around,\u201d Shipley wrote to Llenas, according to a screenshot of his Facebook correspondence with the Fox reporter that Shipley provided to Navy Times. \u201cI\u2018ll help you but avoiding it won\u2019t help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One Twitter user tweeted at the Fox News account on Oct. 10, asking them to retract Garofalo\u2019s segment as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Service records not only show that Garofalo did not serve as a SEAL, but that he did not receive a Purple Heart and did not deploy to Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Freedom of Information response shows Naval Special Warfare Command having no records of Garofalo in the history of the elite units\u2019 ranks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDespite this diligent search, which included variations in spelling and order of name,\u201d no records could be found that Garofalo ever qualified or participated in the SEAL, UDT or SWCC communities, the command\u2019s FOIA response states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">National Personnel Records Center documents show Garofalo coming aboard at U.S. Navy Recruiting Station in New York and heading to basic training at Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that he reported to Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia, in December 1963, according to personnel records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He headed overseas and reported to Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron (VQ) 2 in Rota, Spain, in January 1966, according to records, and separated from the Navy in September 1967.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Fox News segment pans across a variety of medals and decorations in the Garofalo story, including a Purple Heart, personnel records do not show Garofalo receiving such medals and decorations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A form dated 1993 entitled \u201ctransmittal of and\/or entitlement to awards\u201d only lists Garofalo as authorized for a National Defense Service Medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid not served (sic) with a unit\/vessel awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, or any unit citations,\u201d a staff comment reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The form lists Garofalo as the requester of the 1993 review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Fox News segment, Garofalo was reluctant to be referred to as a \u201chero.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are a hero,\u201d Llenas told Garofalo in the segment. \u201cBut like most heroes\u2014\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t like to hear that,\u201d Garofalo said, cutting him off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy don\u2019t you like to hear it?\u201d Llenas asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Garofalo appeared to choke up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHeroes,\u201d he said, \u201care the ones that didn\u2019t come
