{"id":19063,"date":"2019-02-28T00:13:43","date_gmt":"2019-02-28T00:13:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/02\/28\/coast-guard-officer-indicted-on-gun-and-drug-charges\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:17:58","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:17:58","slug":"coast-guard-officer-indicted-on-gun-and-drug-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/02\/28\/coast-guard-officer-indicted-on-gun-and-drug-charges\/","title":{"rendered":"Coast Guard officer indicted on gun and drug charges"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A grand jury has indicted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscg.mil\/\" target=_blank>U.S. Coast Guard<\/a> officer who\u2019s painted by prosecutors as a self-avowed white nationalist with a hit list of Democrats and media personalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although federal authorities last week described <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/02\/21\/prosecutors-coast-guard-officer-plotted-to-murder-innocent-civilians\/\" target=_blank>Lt. Christopher Paul Hasson<\/a>, 49, as \u201ca domestic terrorist, bent on committing acts dangerous to human life,\u201d Wednesday\u2019s indictment was limited to charges that he was a drug addict who unlawfully possessed both a controlled substance and a firearm, plus owning an illegal gun silencer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasson, of Silver Spring, Maryland, was arrested on Feb. 15 and maintains his innocence. His public defender, Liz Oyer, declined to comment Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a motion filed last week to keep Hasson in custody pending trial, prosecutors warned that the gun and drug-related charges were \u201cthe tip of the proverbial iceberg.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. Attorney Robert K. Hur said in a statement Wednesday that the probe continues and evidence is still being gathered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Law enforcement searched Hasson\u2019s \u201ccramped basement apartment&#8221; in Maryland this month and found 15 firearms and more than 1,000 rounds of mixed ammunition, according to court filings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Authorities also wrote that he bought guns, ammo, smoke grenades, magazines and other supplies from vendors across the United State and he\u2019s \u201cespoused extremist views for years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/02\/21\/prosecutors-coast-guard-officer-plotted-to-murder-innocent-civilians\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hasson-guns.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Prosecutors: Coast Guard officer plotted to \u2018murder innocent civilians\u2019<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Lt. Christopher Paul Hasson stockpiled guns, ammunition and steroids and dreamed of mass murder, prosecutors contend.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasson remains on active duty until his case is adjudicated, according to Lt. Cmdr. Scott McBride, a Coast Guard spokesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasson worked on the National Security Cutter program and held a secret-level security clearance from 2005 until Feb. 19, when it was suspended, McBride told Navy Times in an email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere was no evidence of this in Mr. Hasson\u2019s prior (security clearance check) investigations,\u201d McBride said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Coast Guard Investigative Service began probing Hassan\u2019s alleged activities last fall after the service\u2019s Insider Threat Program \u201cfirst identified concerns about him\u201d McBride said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe FBI and CGIS arrested him once they were confident in the strength of the evidence supporting the criminal complaint and warrant,\u201d McBride said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasson conducted online searches for pro-Russian, neo-fascist and neo-Nazi literature between 2017 and 2019, and took inspiration from the manifesto of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/anders-breivik-norway-mass-murderer-appeal-european-human-rights-court-oslo-strasbourg-a8409861.html\" target=_blank>Anders Breivik<\/a>, a far right-wing domestic terrorist who killed 77 people \u2014 mostly children \u2014 in two coordinated attacks in Norway in 2011, according to the filing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Breivik\u2019s manifesto provides \u201ca blueprint for future single cell or \u2018Lone Wolf\u2019 terrorist operations,\u201d federal authorities wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prosecutors, however, did not specify a date for when Hasson allegedly planned to kick off the massacre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consistent with Breivik\u2019s manifesto, however, Hasson \u201cbegan the process of targeting specific victims, including current and former elected officials\u201d in January, according to the filing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasson\u2019s online activity since early 2017 showed him conducting internet searches for phrases such as, \u201cmost liberal senators,\u201d \u201cwhere do most senators live in dc,\u201d \u201cdo senators have ss [secret service] protection\u201d and \u201care supreme court justices protected,\u201d authorities wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the federal filings, Hasson allegedly researched MSNBC host and former Republican congressman Joe Scarborough \u201cafter viewing a headline claiming that Scarborough referred to the President as \u2018the worst ever,\u2019\u201d and after some online digging located the celebrity\u2019s prior home \u201cand then proceeded to scroll in and out on the location for approximately 35 seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prosecutors contend that on Jan. 17, Hasson also \u201ccompiled a list of prominent Democratic Congressional leaders, activists, political organizations, and MSNBC and CNN media personalities,\u201d according to the filing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasson allegedly &#8220;developed this list in the above spreadsheet while reviewing the MSNBC, CNN, and FOX News websites\u2026from his work computer,\u201d the filing states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same day he made the list, prosecutors say Hasson used the search engine Google for the following phases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022\t\u201cwhat if trump illegally impeached\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022\t\u201cbest place in dc to see congress people\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022\t\u201cwhere in dc to (sic) congress live\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022\t\u201ccivil war if trump impeached.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasson regularly perused the manifesto from early 2017 until his arrest this month, focusing on the sections offering advice on amassing guns, food, disguises and survival supplies, the filing states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"901\" height=\"601\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hasson-hgh.png.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27715\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hasson-hgh.png.png 901w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hasson-hgh.png.png?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hasson-hgh.png.png?resize=768,512 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 901px) 100vw, 901px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Authorities found more than 30 bottles labeled &#8220;human growth hormone&#8221; when they searched the apartment of Coast Guard Lt. Christopher Paul Hasson this month. Hasson was a white nationalist who intended to &#8220;murder innocent civilians,&#8221; prosecutors allege.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a June 2017 draft email, he allegedly wrote about \u201cdreaming of a way to kill almost every last person on the earth,\u201d the filing states: \u201cInteresting idea the other day. Start with biological attacks followed by attack on food supply\u2026Have to research this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasson was initially charged with possession of the opioid Tramadol, and he allegedly spoke in his draft email of coming off the drug to \u201cclear my head,\u201d the filing states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He cited the writings of Olympic Park bomber Eric Rudolph and pondered becoming a sheriff, city manager, mayor or other position that would get him leading a community, prosecutors allege.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasson also wrote of copying tactics from Ukraine\u2019s civil war and attacking people on both sides of a partisan divide to stoke tensions and escalate violence, according to the filing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also plotted attacks on food and fuel supplies and masquerading as a police officer to gun down looters and protesters, prosecutors say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can\u2019t just strike to wound I must find a way to deliver a blow that cannot be shaken off,\u201d he wrote, according to the filing. \u201cMaybe many blows that will cause the needed turmoil.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lt.
