Spencer informed him the ship will be named the Cody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cody joins Casper, Cheyenne, Laramie and a few other communities as Wyoming cities chosen as U.S. Navy ship namesakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cody is under construction and is expected to be commissioned within the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fast transport ships carry personnel, equipment and supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Navy Times editor\u2019s note: <\/b> This AP story doesn\u2019t mention it, but the vessel will be classified T-EPF-14, which means it\u2019s a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.austal.com\/ships\/expeditionary-fast-transport-t-epf\" target=_blank> Spearhead-class expeditionary fast transport<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might remember USNS Spearhead originally as JHSV-1, which was intended for the Army\u2019s 7th Sustainment Brigade. Despite coming in over budget and with defects that had to be corrected over the initial five vessels, the Navy counts on the ship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/navydata\/fact_display.asp?cid=4200&#038;tid=1100&#038;ct=4\" target=_blank>to deliver 600 short tons of military cargo 1,200 nautical miles at an average speed of 35 knots in Sea State 3<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of its very shallow draft, the Cody will be able to on\/off-load combat-ready Abrams Main Battle Tanks and up to 312 embarked troops. There\u2019s also a flight deck for helicopters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Located in the northwestern corner of Wyoming, Cody is a small city of under 10,000 residents. Yes, it was named after Col. William Frederick \u201cBuffalo Bill\u201d Cody. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So it\u2019s a town with a namesake <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/weta\/thewest\/people\/a_c\/buffalobill.htm\" target=_blank>that\u2019s long been associated with the Army,<\/a> not the Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The newspaper that broke the news that the next EFT was going to honor Cody is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.codyenterprise.com\/site\/about\/\" target=_blank>Cody Enterprise<\/a>, which was co-founded by Buffalo Bill in 1899. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Firmly entrenched in cowboy culture (and a steady stream of tourists), it features rodeos and museums and \u2014 about 10 miles out of town \u2014 what was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heartmountain.org\/index.html\" target=_blank>Heart Mountain Relocation Cente<\/a>r for Japanese-Americans interned during World War II. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At its peak, the camp\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heartmountain.org\/history.html\" target=_blank>population reached 10,767<\/a>, larger than today\u2019s Cody.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It will be classified T-EPF-14, which means it\u2019s a Spearhead-class expeditionary fast
