Navy warns sailors about consumer genetic tests"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy is warning sailors that taking popular <a href=\"https:\/\/ghr.nlm.nih.gov\/primer\/dtcgenetictesting\/directtoconsumer\" target=_blank>direct-to-consumer genetic tests<\/a> could pose potentially dangerous risks \u2014 beyond the discovery of a family member you never knew you had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sailors might expose themselves and their families\u2019 personal and genetic information to digital hackers and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/gim201838\" target=_blank>inaccuracies<\/a> from the largely unregulated tests themselves could cause readiness problems, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/bupers-npc\/reference\/messages\/Documents\/NAVADMINS\/NAV2020\/NAV20015.txt\" target=_blank>administrative message<\/a> released earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSailors should be advised that Direct to Consumer genetic testing results may inaccurately predict health problems that would appear to raise doubts about a member\u2019s medical readiness,\u201d Navy spokesperson Lt. Samuel Boyle said in a statement to Navy Times Wednesday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFurthermore, giving away genetic information creates personal and operational risks, including mass surveillance and tracking individual Sailors. Until further assessment, Sailors are advised to receive health information from a licensed professional and avoid Direct to Consumer genetic testing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/440727436\/DOD-memo-on-DNA-testing#from_embed\" target=_blank>message mirrors a similar<\/a> warning released by the Pentagon in December and first reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/pentagon-warns-military-members-dna-kits-pose-personal-and-operational-risks-173304318.html\" target=_blank>Yahoo News<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2019\/12\/24\/pentagon-advises-troops-to-not-use-consumer-dna-kits-citing-security-risks\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SEPTF.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Pentagon advises troops to not use consumer DNA kits, citing security risks<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">\u201cMoreover, there is increased concern in the scientific community that outside parties are exploiting the use of genetic data for questionable purposes, including mass surveillance and the ability to track individuals without their authorization or awareness.&quot;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the Navy\u2019s advisory goes further. While acknowledging that learning about one\u2019s family tree is \u201cgood and interesting\u201d in \u201cmost cases,&#8221; it notes that unintended consequences might lurk in the branches. That &#8220;new information could negatively affect your family,\u201d according to the message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to relatives taking the tests, genetic information could become known to the wider public on social media or other corners of the internet. The Navy urges sailors to discuss potentially \u201cunwelcome associations\u201d and other possible consequences with their family members before they participate in the testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">California officials credited information gleaned from a genetics database used by researchers and amateur sleuths with helping to nab the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-nation\/wp\/2018\/04\/27\/data-on-a-genealogy-site-led-police-to-the-golden-state-killer-suspect-now-others-worry-about-a-treasure-trove-of-data\/\" target=_blank>Golden State Killer<\/a> in 2018.
