{"id":19190,"date":"2016-03-16T20:05:33","date_gmt":"2016-03-16T20:05:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/03\/16\/navy-s-code-cracking-officers-get-a-new-name\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:05:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:05:16","slug":"navy-s-code-cracking-officers-get-a-new-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2016\/03\/16\/navy-s-code-cracking-officers-get-a-new-name\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy&#8217;s code-cracking officers get a new name"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These naval officers have been known as cryptologists, information dominators, spooks and cryppies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their new official title: Cryptologic warfare officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The name change distinguishes the cryptologists who surreptitiously collect and break adversaries\u2019 communications with the intelligence officers,\u00a0meteorologists, space cadre and information professionals <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">and others <\/span>who make up the wider information warfare branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognizing these officers as cryptologists rather than information warfare officers is in keeping with their history<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">heritage<\/span>,\u00a0says the Navy\u2019s top cryptologist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This choice honors our cryptologic heritage, reflects the military effects we deliver in the converged domain and more closely ties our officers with our enlisted and civilian force counterparts,&#8221; Vice Adm. Jan Tighe, the 10th Fleet commander who heads the Navy\u2019s cryptologic community, in a Monday news release.
