{"id":19231,"date":"2019-01-13T02:18:45","date_gmt":"2019-01-13T02:18:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/01\/13\/the-navy-veteran-better-known-as-pete-the-groin-crusher\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:00:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:00:29","slug":"the-navy-veteran-better-known-as-pete-the-groin-crusher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/01\/13\/the-navy-veteran-better-known-as-pete-the-groin-crusher\/","title":{"rendered":"The Navy veteran best known as \u2018Pete the Groin Crusher\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PHILADELPHIA \u2014 Nobody ever warns the patients at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennmedicine.org\/for-patients-and-visitors\/penn-medicine-locations\/pennsylvania-hospital\" target=_blank>Pennsylvania Hospital<\/a> about Pete Schiavo, \u201cThe Groin Crusher.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first time most people meet Schiavo, they\u2019ve just come out of a coronary procedure and he\u2019s explaining that after the catheters are pulled out of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/human-body-maps\/femoral-artery#1\" target=_blank>femoral artery<\/a>, he\u2019s going to apply pressure to their groin for 20 to 40 minutes to aid in clotting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Awkward!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or it would be, if it was anyone else but Schiavo, a gregarious, emotional, wisecracking guy who is all South Philly, even if he lives over the bridge in Jersey now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schiavo, 52, was so overwhelmed to learn that reader Sandy Kuritzky, whose husband&#8217;s groin he crushed earlier this year, nominated him for this series that he wept tears of joy several times during his interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I know he doesn&#8217;t remember me or my husband because he has his hands on so many groins,&#8221; Kuritzky said. &#8220;But Pete&#8217;s attitude with his patients and their caregivers is so upbeat and friendly and caring and funny that it makes a stressful time less stressful and difficult.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/12\/27\/that-time-the-navy-decided-to-build-a-flying-cannon\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"165\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Davis12.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">That time the Navy decided to build a flying cannon<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">At least the American prototype didn&#039;t crash into a insane asylum. A British version did.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patients and their families don\u2019t forget the way Schiavo touches them \u2014 physically and emotionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s won awards, had money donated in his name, and gets stopped all the time by former patients who want to buy him drinks or dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;m holding someone&#8217;s groin for 20 minutes, they tend to remember me and nobody else,&#8221; Schiavo said. &#8220;I tell them: &#8216;I can promise you two things when I&#8217;m done: You&#8217;ll never forget my name or my face.&#8217; And they never do.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patients such as Patricia Walters, 73, of South Philly, are completely taken with Schiavo and his sense of humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;What you&#8217;re doing is really crazy!&#8221; Walters said to Schiavo. &#8220;You put your whole heart and soul and your whole body into this. You have a gift and talent that&#8217;s unique.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schiavo, who held Walters&#8217; hand throughout his visit, gave her a big hug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I couldn&#8217;t have been more privileged to hold your groin,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/01\/03\/back-when-navy-officers-settled-beefs-by-shooting-each-other-and-marines\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Duel5.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Back when Navy officers settled beefs by shooting each other \u2014 and Marines<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">\u201cOh Lord, I am a dead man.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schiavo estimates he has crushed \u201cwell over 10,000 groins, without even a sweat\u201d during his 15 years at Pennsylvania Hospital. He\u2019s learned that a three-finger method works best because if you use your whole hand \u201cyou\u2019ll fatigue out in minutes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 5 feet, 2 inches, Schiavo sometimes needs a step stool to stand above patients as he applies pressure for 20 to 40 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Schiavo is no stranger to pressure. He grew up at \u201cNint and Jackson\u201d in South Philly and graduated from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westcatholic.org\/\" target=_blank>West Catholic High<\/a> before joining the Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He spent six years in the service, during which he ran computers on anti-submarine aircraft, saw conflict in Libya, and was put in gator-infested swamps for survival training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My training taught me situational awareness and attention to detail, which helps me in this job today,&#8221; Schiavo said. &#8220;If I&#8217;m not attentive to detail here, somebody is going to die.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the Navy, Schiavo became a welder at a General Electric plant in Southwest Philly. When four of his colleagues died of heart attacks at the plant in a short period of time, GE offered to put employees through EMT and paramedic school so they might be able to aid their colleagues in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schiavo raised his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After training, he began moonlighting as a critical-care technician and volunteered with his local ambulance company. After the GE plant closed, Schiavo was hired at Pennsylvania Hospital \u2014 the nation&#8217;s first hospital \u2014 where he worked as a critical-care tech for three years before his current position opened up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within days, he knew it was the perfect job for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This fit me like a glove, this was like the missing piece of the puzzle for me,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/12\/11\/happy-holidays-seaman-timmy-no-more-confinement-on-bread-and-water-for-you\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/trumpbreadborder.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Happy holidays, Seaman Timmy! No more confinement on bread and water for you<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The arcane punishment will be banned under military justice reforms that will go into effect on Jan. 1.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schiavo\u2019s wife of 29 years is a nurse at Pennsylvania Hospital and the couple have two adult daughters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On his down time, Schiavo likes to make his own wine, cook, and fish \u201cdownashore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt takes too much energy to be miserable, it\u2019s just easier to be happy,\u201d Schiavo said, of his indomitably positive spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m the party guy. I\u2019m that guy . I\u2019m all about la dolce vita \u2014 the sweet life.
