{"id":19246,"date":"2020-02-28T00:28:57","date_gmt":"2020-02-28T00:28:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/02\/28\/pacific-fleet-chinese-destroyers-laser-targeted-us-plane\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T12:33:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T12:33:56","slug":"pacific-fleet-chinese-destroyers-laser-targeted-us-plane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/02\/28\/pacific-fleet-chinese-destroyers-laser-targeted-us-plane\/","title":{"rendered":"Pacific Fleet: Chinese destroyer\u2019s laser targeted US plane"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Chinese warship targeted a U.S. naval patrol aircraft with a laser in international airspace earlier this month, Pacific Fleet announced Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy officials in Hawaii blasted the Chinese actions as \u201cunsafe and unprofessional.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy P-8A Poseidon was conducting routine operations on Feb. 17 about 380 miles west of Guam in the Philippine Sea when the incident occurred, Pacific Fleet spokesperson Lt. j.g. Rachel McMarr told Navy Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The laser was not visible to the naked eye but was detected in flight by sensors on board the aircraft, McMarr said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No aircrew members were injured and the plane landed safely at Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa, Japan, where it is forward deployed from the Jacksonville, Florida-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/airfor\/vp45\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=_blank>Patrol Squadron 45<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe aircraft is currently undergoing a damage assessment,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy said the laser actions by the People\u2019s Liberation Army Navy Destroyer 161 violated the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jag.navy.mil\/distrib\/instructions\/CUES_2014.pdf\" target=_blank>Code for Unplanned Encounters at Sea<\/a>, a multilateral agreement reached at the 2014 Western Pacific Naval Symposium to reduce the chances of at-sea incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chinese destroyer\u2019s actions also ran afoul of a memorandum of understanding regarding rules of behavior for safety of air and maritime encounters between the Department of Defense and the People\u2019s Republic of China Ministry of National Defense, officials added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cU.S Navy aircraft routinely fly in the Philippine Sea and have done so for many years. James Foggo III, the commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe and U.S. Naval Forces Africa, told reporters Wednesday that the Russian spy ship was operating a \u201ccouple hundred\u201d miles off the East Coast.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only Chinese warship with 161 as a pennant number is the Hohhot, a Type 052D Luyang III-class guided-missile destroyer that joined PLAN\u2019s South Sea Fleet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navalnews.com\/naval-news\/2019\/01\/chinas-tenth-type-052d-destroyer-and-sixth-type-071-lpd-commissioned-with-the-plan\/\" target=_blank>at the beginning of 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there have been run-ins with other Chinese forces in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2018, a Chinese warship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/10\/02\/us-pacific-fleet-says-chinese-destroyer-came-dangerously-close-to-navy-ship\/\">nearly collided<\/a> with the American guided-missile destroyer Decatur in what the U.S. Navy termed an \u201cunsafe and unprofessional maneuver.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Jan. 25, the littoral combat ship Montgomery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/01\/28\/navy-conducts-years-first-fonop-in-south-china-sea\/\" target=_blank>skirted a disputed island in the South China Sea<\/a>, sparking Beijing to scramble two armed fighter-bomber jets which \u201cexpelled it\u201d from the area, Chinese state-run media claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link
