Adrian Jansen is one of several flag officers found to have done wrong in the decade-long bacchanal of west Pacific fraud and bribery known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/03\/08\/fat-leonard-wrongdoing-not-a-definite-career-killer-for-navy-officers\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cFat Leonard\u201d<\/a> scandal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navy.mil\/submit\/display.asp?story_id=98850\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">was found guilty<\/a> last year of taking more than $5,000 in private dinners and wine from Malaysian magnate \u201cFat Leonard\u201d Glenn Francis while serving as naval attach\u00e9 in Indonesia from 2010 to 2013, according to the Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jansen also failed to report the interactions and was allowed to put in for retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/adrian-jansen-24292bb\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">LinkedIn profile<\/a> notes he is \u201ctransitioning after 34 years of Navy Service.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to touting his intel and national security pedigree, Jansen\u2019s LinkedIn bio notes that he has an \u201cActive Top Secret SCI security clearance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/03\/08\/fat-leonard-wrongdoing-not-a-definite-career-killer-for-navy-officers\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/USS-Salvor.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">\u2018Fat Leonard\u2019 wrongdoing not a definite career killer for Navy officers<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Disciplinary records show several officers found to have accepted gifts from &quot;Fat Leonard&quot; were recommended to retain command.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than a year after he was taken to admiral\u2019s mast for Uniform Code of Military Justice violations, Pentagon officials confirmed this week that Jansen still has a security clearance, a status that baffled experts in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is \u201cno logical explanation\u201d for why Jansen would still have a security clearance, said Sheldon Cohen, a security clearance lawyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnder these circumstances, I think a person at that level, at those charges, to still have their clearance, is extraordinary,\u201d he said. \u201cI know of no legitimate reason why he or any other person would retain a Top-Secret SCI clearance with those level of charges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jansen submitted a retirement request around the time of his February 2017 admiral\u2019s mast, where he received a punitive letter of reprimand and a $7,500 fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is now administratively assigned to Naval Installations Command and declined comment through a command spokesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon this week declined to confirm the level of Jansen\u2019s current clearance, but the \u201cSCI\u201d listed on his LinkedIn stands for \u201cSensitive Compartmented Information.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTop Secret SCI is intelligence information at the highest level,\u201d Cohen said, adding that the situation was \u201cmost unusual.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"789\" height=\"617\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/cropped-Jansen-SCI-clearance.jpg.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/cropped-Jansen-SCI-clearance.jpg.png 789w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/cropped-Jansen-SCI-clearance.jpg.png?resize=300,235 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/cropped-Jansen-SCI-clearance.jpg.png?resize=768,601 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 789px) 100vw, 789px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cohen said he saw no explanation for the retention, other than Jansen being \u201cthe beneficiary of favoritism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat discipline would normally lead to a loss of security clearance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Security clearance screening guidelines are not always followed, and the government creates problems for itself in the process, according to Martha Deutscher, a retired Pentagon official and author of \u201cScreening the System,\u201d a book chronicling shortfalls in the screening process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we\u2019re going to subject everyone to this clearance, we should do it in a routine manner and certainly not make exceptions for people at the higher echelon,\u201d Deutscher said. \u201cThey protect their own, I think, to a certain extent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pentagon officials said the services make recommendations regarding when a security clearance should be revoked, and referred questions about Jansen\u2019s continuing clearance back to the Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy spokesman Cmdr. William Speaks declined to specify why Jansen has retained the clearance, but said Jansen\u2019s current gig does not involve him having access to classified information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Navy publicized Jansen\u2019s admiral\u2019s mast last year, officials have largely refused to make public who has been punished for what in the Fat Leonard scandal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can\u2019t really get into the specifics of what actions we\u2019ve taken,\u201d Speaks said of Jansen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that \u201call appropriate actions and notifications have been made in all administrative actions\u201d taken in connection to Fat Leonard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pentagon spokeswoman Army Maj.
