It was developed by the software giant\u2019s Military Affairs division, headed by <a href=\"https:\/\/nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Ffeed%2Fupdate%2Furn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A6732336459799515136%2F&#038;data=04%7C01%7Cjared.morgan%40militarytimes.com%7Ce07c9ac4e0a04c0db75808d8866769b1%7C1d5c96e57ee2446dbed8d0f8c50edea5%7C1%7C1%7C637407126023036570%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&#038;sdata=xhJbUsiPB4gJ3Yb%2FgonTSakUoILj0unJOAemR5bHDpY%3D&#038;reserved=0\">Chris Cortez<\/a> as its vice president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor years, Microsoft Military Affairs has been committed to helping veterans learn to apply their military experience to meaningful technology careers,\u201d said Cortez in an emailed statement. \u201cI\u2019m very pleased to share our new Tech Transition Toolkit to help those who have served take their next steps toward building those careers. Even in such uncertain times as these, we believe in the power of perseverance and we know the value veterans bring to our industry is as important as ever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cortez retired from the Marine Corps as a major general in 2004 after more than 33 years of service. Cortez led the Marine Corps Recruiting Command in Quantico, Virginia, recruiting more than 75,000 Marines before retiring. He also spent time as director for the Pacific Command, where he oversaw operations for 300,000 military personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The software company claims when companies focus on veterans, that attention yields higher retention rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft credits its high retention rates of veteran employees to being not just veteran-friendly, but \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Fpulse%2Frecruit-retain-top-talent-sure-your-company-just-chris-cortez%2F%3Flipi%3Durn%253Ali%253Apage%253Ad_flagship3_profile_view_base%253BvXrcc4hmSBKkziWEDdfGQQ%253D%253D%26licu%3Durn%253Ali%253Acontrol%253Ad_flagship3_profile_view_base-featured_item_detail_view&#038;data=04%7C01%7Cjared.morgan%40militarytimes.com%7Ce07c9ac4e0a04c0db75808d8866769b1%7C1d5c96e57ee2446dbed8d0f8c50edea5%7C1%7C1%7C637407126023056559%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&#038;sdata=qXlAni466BIIElVf7LAXdfjeQ1eAs2r8H8aTNNTL2%2BQ%3D&#038;reserved=0\">veteran-ready<\/a>,\u201d by providing the unique resources veterans need to thrive in the civilian world, the company said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe expertise and strengths veterans gain through service often align with what private companies are commonly recruiting for: logistics, operations, finance, and human resources,\u201d Cortez said. \u201cThere\u2019s a close connection between military background and industry need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft\u2019s toolkit provides tips on how to create a LinkedIn page that stands out to recruiters, which tech terms to learn and use in your resume and how to optimize your virtual workspace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most important tactics for securing any job involves networking. Microsoft suggests veterans sign up for a free year of <a href=\"https:\/\/socialimpact.linkedin.com\/programs\/veterans\/premiumform\">LinkedIn Premium<\/a>, which will help in growing their network and increase their job search prospects. To sign up, you have to first log in with your \u201cTroop ID,\u201d which can be obtained by creating a new account if you don\u2019t already have one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once on LinkedIn, job seekers should join groups that pertain to the job their looking to secure. Reach out to people you\u2019ve worked with in the past, Microsoft said, and don\u2019t be afraid to make new connections. Especially in tech, veterans are uniquely qualified for some of the most in-demand and under filled roles\u2014and often have the security clearances companies need and
