Lionel James breaks down the M17&#8211;literally.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army officials are evaluating two illuminators to add to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/01\/23\/not-just-a-sidearm-armys-new-handgun-marks-first-step-to-changing-how-soldiers-fight\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\">Modular Handgun System<\/a> for a small subset of soldiers who need the light\/laser capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those same soldiers will also need a different holster to accommodate the device, which will attache to the built-in rail system of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2017\/09\/18\/marines-evaluating-new-compact-handgun\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">M17 <\/a>and M18 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/off-duty\/gearscout\/shot-show\/2018\/01\/23\/modular-handgun-system-competitors-on-display-for-public\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">handguns <\/a>that make up the MHS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a recent interview with Daryl Easlick, the small arms deputy for the Army\u2019s Lethality Branch, Army Times learned that picking a laser\/light combination isn\u2019t as easy as going on a quick shopping trip with unit funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/06\/28\/cabelas-might-have-been-a-cheaper-option-for-the-militarys-newest-handgun-after-all-report-shows\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MHS-3rd-Cavalry-Regiment.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Cabela\u2019s might have been a cheaper option for the military\u2019s newest handgun after all, report shows<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A recently released report from the Congressional Research Office compared the defense contract for the newest pistol for all of the services and what it would have cost to buy it off the shelf.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The equipment needs to have a white light function, common to the way military police use the device. (Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key is to shrink that capability down to a size that won\u2019t make the M17 look like a double-barrel shotgun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can get a lot of white light, but that takes a lot of battery,\u201d Easlick said. \u201cBut with a lot of battery I have a lot of size.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The power goes beyond the brightness too. The \u2018pistol enhancer\u2019 device must run for up to 1.5 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, Easlick and his team must keep the device within strict parameters, fitting no further down than the height of the trigger guard on the M17, flush with or behind the muzzle and no wider than 1.5 inches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two companies, <a href=\"https:\/\/defense.lasermax.com\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">LaserMax Defense<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamlight.com\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Streamlight<\/a> have submitted lasers that meet those requirements, Easlick said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those two submissions will be used by soldiers later this summer for soldier input and evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the additional safety, budget planning and laser-specific testing required, the light is likely to be fielded by this time next year, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simultaneously, the service is looking at a holster that can accommodate the device when mounted on the pistol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1600\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/M18-w_Enabler.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44668\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/M18-w_Enabler.jpg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/M18-w_Enabler.jpg.jpg?resize=225,300 225w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/M18-w_Enabler.jpg.jpg?resize=768,1024 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/M18-w_Enabler.jpg.jpg?resize=1152,1536 1152w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Army&#8217;s small arms team at its Lethality Branch are evaluating two submissions for the future laser\/light combination for the Modular Handgun System the same device will fit on both the full-size M17 and compact M18 (pictured here) pistols. (Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army will buy at least 230,000 pistols over the 10-year, $580 million contract, not to mention those being purchased by other services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But only those in roles that require a light\/laser combo will get the pistol enhancer, Easlick said. He didn\u2019t have exact quantities to share but said that the number would be far lower than the total number of pistols being purchased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The big takeaway for Army unit commanders though is not to rush out and buy a light that might mount on the pistol but not fit your future holster.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The new laser
