{"id":20438,"date":"2020-01-30T18:10:53","date_gmt":"2020-01-30T18:10:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/01\/30\/why-the-army-pulled-bradleys-out-of-syrian-oil-fields-after-one-month\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:08:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:08:25","slug":"why-the-army-pulled-bradleys-out-of-syrian-oil-fields-after-one-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/01\/30\/why-the-army-pulled-bradleys-out-of-syrian-oil-fields-after-one-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Why the Army pulled Bradleys out of Syrian oil fields after one month"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2019\/10\/31\/bradleys-and-army-infantry-roll-into-syria-to-help-secure-oil-wells\/\" target=_blank>Bradley fighting vehicles <\/a>sent into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2019\/10\/25\/us-to-send-mechanized-forces-to-secure-syrian-oil-fields\/\" target=_blank>Syria to guard oil fields<\/a> from a potential Islamic State resurgence were pulled from the country after roughly one month, U.S. Army Central Command confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mechanized soldiers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/06\/12\/brigade-combat-teams-at-the-highest-level-of-readiness-have-doubled-under-deploy-or-get-out\/\" target=_blank>30th Armored Brigade Combat Team<\/a> were dispatched in late October but were pulled sometime in November after combined patrols with Turkish forces \u201cnever materialized&#8221; and the \u201cmission requirements changed,\u201d said Army Lt. Col. David Olson, a spokesman for the Army\u2019s regional component command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOriginally, what was going on in the battlefield, they were still doing combined patrols with the Turks, and then that stopped,\u201d Olson said over the telephone. \u201cThey didn\u2019t get that far.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exact numbers weren\u2019t given, but Olson said there were \u201conly a handful\u201d of Bradleys sent in the first place. Soldiers rotating through that part of Syria have in the past received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/10\/30\/bastogne-brigade-returns-from-mideast-with-fresh-combat-badges\/\" target=\"_blank\">combat action badges <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/06\/19\/about-60-brave-rifles-troopers-earned-combat-badges-on-patrol-and-pounding-isis-with-artillery\/\" target=\"_blank\">combat infantry badges<\/a> after skirmishing with ISIS fighters, but the none of the mechanized soldiers received them during their month-long stint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bradleys were dispatched in late October following President Donald Trump\u2019s decision to withdraw U.S. troops from northern Syria after Turkey launched an incursion on Oct. 9 to combat U.S.-backed Kurdish forces near the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Operation Inherent Resolve coalition still \u201chas a mix of Motorized Infantry, Special Operations, and other troops partnered with the [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/12\/19\/heres-what-may-be-driving-a-us-troop-withdrawal-from-syria\/\" target=\"_blank\">Syrian Democratic Forces<\/a>] to defeat ISIS remnants and protect critical infrastructure in Deir ez Zor and Hasakah Provinces,&#8221; said Army Col. Myles B. DeAndre Pierce)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditionally, motorized units are those that utilize \u201csoft-skin\u201d vehicles, like Humvees, while mechanized units involve armored vehicles, like the Bradley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 30th ABCT still has roughly 100 soldiers \u201cin and around Syria\u201d to support operations, Olson said. But there are no longer any Bradleys. About 500 American troops remain in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The WarZone first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/31979\/american-bradley-armored-vehicles-were-pulled-out-of-syria-after-less-than-two-months\" target=_blank>reported<\/a> the mechanized troops\u2019 departure, sharing photos that showed Bradleys awaiting airlift at Erbil International Airport, in northern Iraq, in December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bradleys were part of a media blitz that showed the U.S. military\u2019s commitment to Syria even after the White House abruptly pulled American forces from the northern part of the country, ceding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2019\/10\/16\/what-it-means-for-us-bases-in-syria-to-be-occupied-by-syrian-and-russian-forces\/\" target=_blank>bases to Russian troops<\/a> and paving the way for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2019\/10\/09\/turkey-begins-an-offensive-against-kurdish-fighters-in-syria\/\" target=_blank>Turkey\u2019s offensive against Kurdish groups<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 30th ABCT soldiers were photographed and touted by the coalition during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/image\/5906903\/press-conference-and-demonstration\" target=_blank>press events<\/a> on Nov. 11 before they returned to Kuwait. They were originally posted to Kuwait as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/04\/15\/largest-guard-armored-unit-deployment-in-a-decade-wraps-up-an-even-bigger-one-is-on-the-way\/\" target=_blank>Operation Spartan Shield\u2019s rotational brigade<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While they\u2019re no longer there, U.S. officials said the goals remain the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are maintaining our presence in northeast Syria and at At-Tanf garrison to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS and deny ISIS access to oil fields in [northeast] Syria,\u201d Marine Corps Capt. Marisa Roberts, deputy spokesperson for the coalition, said in an email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At-Tanf is a small garrison in southern Syria where U.S. special operators have been training an anti-ISIS force dubbed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2019\/12\/11\/congress-is-worried-about-an-iranian-threat-to-a-small-garrison-of-us-commandos-in-syria\/\" target=_blank>Maghaweir Thowra<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur mission in Syria today remains the same as it was when we first began operations in 2014; to enable the enduring defeat of Daesh. ISIS fighters are still operating in the region and relentless pressure from our SDF partners is keeping them from resurging,\u201d Roberts
