military veterans<\/a> reached record numbers in Colorado last year, with more than one former service member dying by suicide every week, a new report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2020 National Veteran Suicide Prevention report from the Department of Veterans Affairs said Colorado\u2019s rate was \u201csignificantly higher\u201d than the national rate, <a href=\"https:\/\/gazette.com\/premium\/veteran-suicides-in-colorado-significantly-higher-than-national-averages-according-to-new-va-report\/article_23444d50-2b7e-11eb-b08a-770c4e4f9c2a.html\" target=_blank>The Gazette reported<\/a> Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a data.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colorado recorded 43 deaths by suicide of male and female veterans per 100,000 in 2019, compared with 32 deaths nationally per 100,000 in 2018, the most current year for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/10\/09\/new-veteran-suicide-numbers-raise-concerns-among-experts-hoping-for-positive-news\/\" target=_blank>national statistics<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 217 veteran suicide deaths in Colorado last year was an all-time high and a 25 percent increase over 2018, according to Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and state violent-crime statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were 46,510 American adults who died by suicide in 2018, including 6,435 veterans, an increase of 36 veteran deaths by suicide over 2017, the VA report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2020\/05\/21\/suicide-risk-for-veterans-could-grow-as-coronavirus-crisis-winds-down\/\" immediate isolation of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Firearms accounted for 64.7 percent of Colorado veteran suicide deaths in 2018, compared to 51 percent nationwide, the VA said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are people really struggling,\u201d said Kirsten Belaire, behavioral health director at
